White background in earring photo

by Rebecca

Can you tell me how you have achieved a lovely white background in the earring photo on your website banner?

I have learnt a lot from your website - thank you.

Jewelry Photo with White Background

For that photo, I laid the earrings down on my scanner glass, put a white cloth over the top of them, and scanned them! A white sheet of paper would probably work equally well.

However, white backgrounds don't tend to work well with black or very dark jewelry, because of the contrast. White tends to make dark jewelry too dark and hard to see the details.

You can also use PhotoShop to remove the background from any piece of jewelry and make it white instead, but it's very tedious. If your jewelry will photograph well against a white surface, that's a faster way to go. You'll still have to edit your photo to balance the color to true white, but that's much easier than removing it.
