What Makes Me Buy From a Jewelry Website

by Camila Alvarez
(Gainesville FL)

I'm an active online shopper, and I purchase all kinds of items on the Internet.

I love unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry that I won't see anyone else wearing, so I love finding jewelry artists who sell from their own website.

Several times I've bought beautiful pieces from an artist's website, for myself as well as for gifts for my sister and friends.

I've always had wonderful experiences with shopping from jewelry artists' websites - but there are a few things I look for in a jewelry designer's website before I actually buy from them online:

1) Some sort of guarantee or statement of what I can do if I'm not happy with the way the jewelry looks or fits when I receive it in the mail and finally get to see it in person. I like to know I won't be stuck with a bracelet that doesn't fit after all, or a necklace that isn't comfortable when I try it on.

2) Some sort of artist biography or artist statement, preferably with a photo of the artist. If I'm buying handmade, I want to see who makes it, and learn a little about them! I won't be meeting them in person, but I want some way of feeling like I've met them.

3) Testimonials from other customers. I'm more confident in purchasing from an unknown one-person business when I see reviews from other people. Just as I check for reviews before I buy a book or movie on Amazon.com, I want to see what other customers have to say about the artist whose work I'm considering buying.

Thank you to all the jewelry artists who create such wonderful, unique things! Please keep it up and don't let the economy stop you.

Thank you for your comments on what makes you buy from online jewellery designers!

It is valuable information for us as sometimes we don't get feedback on what our customers are really looking for and wanting from us and making you feel like you've had a happy, easy pleasant experience shopping with us is the reason we do what we do!

Thank you for your words of encouragement and support re the economy too.

Thank you for the helpful comments! I just launched my own site: www.linnygirldesigns.com
I never thought of putting a bio on the site, because to tell you the truth, I thought it would be a bit goofy. I never thought that personalizing the jewelry designs with a glimpse or bit of information about me, the artist, might give the buyer a good feeling about purchasing from me. I will definitely add a bio now!

Thanks for the advice

I never thought about putting testimonials on my website, but your advice has given me an idea. Why not put the pictures of the women who have purchased from me, wearing their DreamStonz piece, together with the testimonial? Do you think buyers might be willing to send me a photo post purchase? Perhaps I can give them an incentive to do that (a % off coupon?).

Thanks again for giving us feedback!

As a former attorney consultant we relied heavily on our biographies and work to gain credibility and reliability with our clients.

The feedback here helps tremendously! My focus is always on perfecting the product itself, I now see the importance of establishing my identity on the web. Thank you for your comments.

Just started my own Jewelry Website and thanks for your valuable insight as to what customers are looking for when they buy online. I already had a bio and comments from other customers, but didn't think it would be a good idea to add my own picture. Now I think I might. It's good to share these comments, that's how we learn.

Your comments are very helpful and appreciated. I never thought to put a pic or bio of myself. I will have to work on that asap. Most of my creations do have little stories with them on what made me create them. Please check out my website and send me feedback thru email. Thanks!!!

I sell Fused Glass on Etsy. I am so glad that you brought up the fact that the seller should give a picture with a brief bio. My hubby has been telling me to do that and I kept putting it off.
After reading this.. I am going to get to work on that bio and slip it in the packages for my customers.. Thanks so much!!

I love the description of yourself
by: connecttoheaven

As a former teacher I could really relate to the picture of you -- so glad to be home and do something nice for yourself - like look around for jewelry artists!

My work is on Etsy and I recommend it for other jewelry designers and crafters because there is a wide audience, you have your own shop, 5 pictures for each piece and description of yourself too.

Happy Hunting!

Very useful!! thanks

I appreciate your candor and your thoughts about the things that make you happy with hand crafted jewelry. It's refreshing to see the other side of my jewelry tool fence and open my eyes to a whole different perspective.

What makes me buy from a jewelry website
by: Clihe Jewels

The comments are a great read. I am very lucky in that I am able to talk to most of my clients. That personal touch I think is what sells the item in question. We need to try to present that personal touch in our web site shop as well. Sometimes it can be very difficult. But this web site has really helped me in conquering that problem. I plan to work harder at giving that personal touch with every item on my site.

I want to thank all of those who are our customers that made comments to help us serve you better in the future. Thank you so much.

A Gift for you!
