Using Gravel for Displays?

by Cindy
(Minnesota)

Does anyone use gravel for displaying their rings or charms? I have found some black gravel by TAG and was wondering if that works ok with sterling silver jewelry or if it will scratch it.

Gravel vs. Other Material for Displays
by: Rena

Hi Cindy,

I've never seen gravel used - but it sounds like it could be a really interesting and attractive background.

But I agree - I'd be concerned about the scratching possibility.

What about using black tumbled stones that have smooth surfaces and have been well washed? (You may even be able to tumble the gravel you're considering.)

Or how about using dried black beans or dried dark-colored rice? That would probably be easier on your jewelry.

Gravel for displays
by: Anonymous

Hi! I display my beach glass jewelry in a white tray on white gravel with some shells and starfish as props.

Sales increased with this display versus a black velvet tray and pad. I use fine aquarium gravel that you can get at any pet store and I haven't had any scratching issues but it is beach glass so not highly polished items.

I've seen lots of use of gravel. The good thing is, it is easily washed after a dusty show. Bad thing, the weight, depending on how much you use.

Aquarium gravel is sometimes a bit rough. You can find some great gravel (even in metallic colors,) at craft stores such as Michael's or Joann.

Good luck!

Gravel & Rice for Displays
by: Cindy

Thank you everyone for your comments. I did decide to use some smaller black gravel sold by TAG and I also used black rice. Both looked very nice and I received lots of positive comments from the customers who came the Women & Wine event.
