Hello my fellow jewelry artists. OK, do you have problems taking the perfect picture?

Finally I took my jewelry outside and the pictures turned out great.

I love how you can see the jewelry and it's not blurry or anything.

I know in the winter it might be harder to do but the more natural sunlight you get the better the picture comes out.

I hope I helped out, give it a try. =)

Indirect Sunlight Makes Great Jewelry Photos
by: Rena

Hi Danica,

Thanks for sharing this tip!

I also prefer natural light for photographing jewelry.

But I find that direct sunlight can create a glare, shadows, or reflections on my jewelry, and can also result in over-exposed photos.

So I think my best jewelry photos come from using indirect natural light - for example, indoors near a big window.

I often photograph my jewelry on a variety of different backdrops on my coffee table in the living room. I can adjust the window-blinds perfectly to allow just the right amount of light to come in.

Several jewelry artists have also told me they take their photos on a covered porch, where their jewelry is out of the direct sun but still gets enough natural light for a good photo.

I totally agree, Danica, that natural light makes the best jewelry photos!

I think the trick is finding the best spot to take them, and playing with your camera's settings till you find that sweet combination that yields the most beautiful pictures.

well, after struggling to pay my professional photographer and to devise a quick turnaround for my custom pieces, i tried several set ups to try and photograph my work. for diffused light in the day time, try to use a plastic box- you know the rubbermaid type milky white, lay it on its side and it creates a soft but strong light in which pix come out great. one of my artist friends also suggests using the shade of an umbrella under which to nest the pieces but i have yet to try that out.
meanwhile the plastic storage box is working great.

another thing i do when i have to deliver a custom piece and still want to have a visual record, i scan it on my copier and save the image. that way i can accurately count all the beads and findings which i need in order to do my costings. also once the image is scanned in there are so many size and cropping manipulations that can be done to use them for a variety of purposes like- earring card backdrop design, business card image, watermark in letterheads etc.

so happy creating everyone, we don't want to put any pro photographers out of biz, we are just trying to update our own skills!
