Traveling with Jewelry

How to Safeguard Your Personal Jewelry
Away from Home

There are two groups of travelers: the minimalist, who packs just a few key pieces - and the opposite, who brings everything.

This also applies to the jewelry they bring on a trip. Some travelers won't wear any jewelry, or if they do, it's something inexpensive and simple. Other travelers won't part with any of their jewelry no matter where they're going.

Traveling with Minimal Jewelry

I love my jewelry, but when I travel, I am the minimalist. I wear only my wedding band, a simple pair of gold hoop earrings and a plastic watch.

When you're retiring for the night, you can keep your minimal jewelry selection organized quite simply by slipping your rings onto your watch band and then closing the clasp.

And if your watch strap is made from leather, you can press your earrings through its holes to keep them from getting lost.

Traveling with Jewelry
Can Attract Thieves

Tourists who wear a lot of jewelry stand out and can be a potential target for theft.

There are so many glorious destinations where the local people unfortunately struggle because of poverty and rely on tourists for their livelihood. Blending in with the locals and not drawing attention to yourself when traveling is often a wise idea, but it can sometimes be a challenge. In some countries, I definitely would not blend in since I am a blonde and almost 6 feet tall.

I certainly do not want to draw added attention by wearing a lot of jewelry.

Jewelry at the Beach

I cannot stress enough that when you travel, please keep it simple when it comes to wearing jewelry.

If you're heading to a beach destination, don't wear your jewels - especially your rings, because the person who scours the beaches with his metal detector will wind up laughing all the way to the bank.

Suntan lotion makes your fingers slippery, making rings slip off easily - and swimming in the cold ocean makes your fingers shrink and your rings slide off.

If You Travel with
Several Pieces of Valuable Jewelry

For people who do choose to travel with jewels, it's best to keep your jewelry securely with you while in transit - in your handbag or carry-on bag.

If you're a frequent traveler, i.e. business traveler, you may wish to invest in a traveling jewelry case that has compartments designed to keep your jewelry organized and protected.

One thing to keep in mind when purchasing a travel case is the type and quantity of jewelry you will be traveling with. There are different types of jewelry cases, and you want to make sure you purchase the appropriate type for your needs.

If you're staying at a hotel, a wise idea would be to keep your jewelry in the hotel's safe or safety deposit box, or in your room's safe.

Again, traveling with minimal jewelry is always the best and safest policy.

Avoid Trouble with Customs
When Traveling with Your Own Jewelry

When traveling to other countries with your jewelry, it's also advisable to bring with you copies of sales receipts, appraisal certificates or insurance papers as proof of ownership for any jewelry you bring.

By doing so you will avoid potential problems with Customs regarding import taxes and Customs declarations.
