Safeguarding
Your Personal Jewelry

© by Baya Gatter; all rights reserved

Your personal jewelry has been acquired over your lifetime. It might include sentimental pieces such as your first gold chain with a religious medallion, your childhood charm bracelet, a diamond engagement ring or inherited antique jewelry.

Safeguarding your jewelry with a few simple steps is important, as jewelry is easily lost or stolen.

In addition to sentimental value, the pieces in your personal jewelry collection often have significant monetary value.

For example, as designs and styles change over time, older jewelry dating to the Victorian and Art Deco periods could be difficult to replace, especially in the case of a very unique piece.

But safeguarding your jewelry doesn't necessarily mean storing it so securely that it never gets worn. Over the years, I have heard so many people share similar stories - namely that they have so much jewelry, but they've put it away in safety deposit boxes.

Yes, that is an excellent place for safe-keeping - but jewelry is meant to be worn and enjoyed to its full glory, not hidden. One of my customers loves her "bling-bling" so much she refers to herself as a year-round decorated Christmas tree. She certainly sparkles with her beautiful collections!

I wish to share with you some suggestions for safeguarding your personal jewels:

Outside your home, a safety deposit box really is the most secure place for your jewelry. You can rent one for a reasonable annual fee at most financial institutions.

In your safety deposit box you can keep your valuable jewelry (along with your receipts and appraisal certificates), and bring home just a few pieces every month, interchanging them as you wish.

Avoid Becoming a Jewelry Crime Victim

Your personal safety and security are #1. By taking the basic precautions above, you can minimize your risk of becoming a target for jewelry theft.

With these suggestions in mind, I sincerely hope that your favorite and cherished jewels are safe for your enjoyment for many years to come.
