Reno Treasures - Sandy and Paul

by Paul Mattson
(Reno, NV)

My name is Paul and I have been fortunate enough to be associated with my wife for almost 35 years in business, family and now designer jewelry.

Sandy Hirsch is her name and like many artists she has a creative mind that rarely sleeps. Her gifts are many - from creating a nutritional meal from scratch that a household of children will enjoy, to selling flooring for a large company owned by Warren Buffett, her mind is wired to visualize and create something that others don't see.

Her grasp for color combinations that would look good in a customer's home and her ability to ask the right questions has allowed her to be a top salesperson in interior design.

At home in the studio, her exquisite designs with jewelry can be used for all occasions and it is not uncommon for Sandy to put in a full day at work, then come home and make a necklace-bracelet and a pair of earrings and read a book before retiring for the evening.

Like many artists, sleeping is not a priority and for Sandy, getting the most out of life is what keeps her happy.

It all started from a ceramic class we took together working with clay at the local college.

Her creativity and hand-eye coordination allowed her to flow with some psychic gift and turn a lump of clay into an elephant or turtle, a bust of Elvis Presley and Buddhas. Watching her work and putting a personality into the faces of each piece - bringing them to life, was an extraordinary experience.

I was never far from the process because in all of the years we've been together I've wanted to be near her greatness. You could sense the flow from something that was good and spiritual... Glowing and soft. It was like living in heaven on earth - everything she touched had a voice.

We started to enter contests at art shows from Mendocino to Sacramento in California and the first place ribbons began to roll in. But we were running out of room.

The kiln and work table somehow made it between the bedroom and the bathroom. The kitchen cabinets housed the final product, and when the grandkids visited we needed to put the glazes out of reach from inquiring little hands.

About this time a flyer arrived in the mail from Morgan Hill, California, inviting us to participate in a one-week outdoor festival extravaganza with live music, plenty of food and 100,000 people milling about in the great outdoors.

It was called the "MUSHROOM MARDI GRAS" and we thought if we created hundreds of mushrooms out of clay, glazed them in different colors, added gold, silver and other filler pieces, and charged a whole lot of money - we could have some fun with people and make a little money on the side. We did and it was a big hit, but physically it was very taxing.

After having our eyes opened at other ways to perform art and make money, we started having home parties at a friend's home and she would host it with friends of hers while we did presentations and sold jewelry while everyone ate. It being a small town, however, we ran out of friends and moved to Reno, Nevada with a vision and a refined product that doesn't include mushrooms.

Today we have hundreds of units that are all originals by "Sandy" but can be duplicated...

THE JOURNEY HAS BEEN GOOD BUT IF FEELS AS THOUGH WE HAVE JUST BEGUN...

Our business is RenoTreasures@Yahoo.com, and we welcome you to participate in our future growth!

Nice to Meet You Both!
by: Rena

Hi Paul and Sandy,

It's nice to get to know you both.

Sounds like Sandy is one of the creatively gifted people who can turn anything into art - and that the road you travel together is paved with lots of love and appreciation for each other.

When you get some photos of Sandy's work (or a photo of the two of you), please send it along to me, and I'll add it to your jewelry story!

Thanks so much for sharing your story with us.

The artist"s partner
by: Paul

Now I don't know for sure if I'm the lone ranger here but the partner of an artist is like being a step parent..you appreciate the product but its
not REALLY yours. Its not about love or ownership but when unconditionally you become attached to a precious entity the natural instinct is to call it your own. With children you nourish every aspect of their development and
as they grow you can see part of yourself in them
and when you have been living and working closely
with an artist over the years your mind wants to accept that same principle-part of you has helped create that work of art BUT ITS NOT REALLY
YOURS. Are you with me ?
I accept this without reservation......

But here is my problem in regards to where I am now and I can use some advice. Our business venture on-line depends on me joining the 21st
century and for a golfer ( a good one incidently)
with no skills in this type of thing its a little
notice the typo ?
dicey. I took a basic computer class for seniors
but all of us forgot how to get where we wanted to go every time the teacher told us to go there.
Those who brought their oxygen tanks with them had a little more luck. I've never typed before
in my life so by the time I have a cognitive run,
my thought process is interupted by a NORTON
SECURITY FLASH on the computer screen that a recent attempt to invade my hardware was blocked.

What does this mean ? If you are reading this please, give the artst's partner a few words of
encouragement and tell me your story.

Maybe there is common ground..... I need the world to meet this incredible artist but at this
rate it will be much to long and everyone will miss out.

PLEASE HELP THE PARTNER...thank you

keeping love alive
by: Dr. Paul

I'm often asked how does one develop the skills
necessary in keeping an intimate relationship alive. It starts early in the day from the moment
my alarm goes off at 5 a.m. until I get out of bed at 9:15. In between I take a series of decompression naps while monitoring home jewelry
business success tips. Eventually I emerge from the bedroom on my way to a hearty breakfast of coffee with extra coffee. It takes strengh, motivation and a little something called love..

Its a habit of mine that is done intentionally and consistently with a primary focus to give
pleasure throughout the day rather than pain. Its a ritual of creating love and friendship toward those I'm about to encounter in creating
a meaningful life and common philosophy. It is
sharing a purpose with the goal of growing as one
in the world community....

I try and create a safe space for sharing-in what
went right and what went wrong. When speaking I
focus from the heart and I am emotional and
spontaneous. When listening I do it with
compassion and acceptance.

When I join up with Sandy I kiss her on the cheek
and whisper sweet nothings in her ear and drink
more coffee TOGETHER before she leaves for work..

Marital bliss is like golf and retirement..never
waste valuable psychic energy on negativity when
your quest for excellence is at stake.

WORK AS HARD AS YOU CAN TO GET WHERE YOU
WANT TO GO. GIVE IT A TRY-ITS EASY

Franciscan Gardens
by: Paul

We had an acre in what is now the center of town in a little city called Winters, California. My
stepson Doug, and my father-in law, Bob, built living space and a designer jewelry studio for Sandy and me while we were bringing up 15 truck
loads of Franciscan Dinnerware Made in California

This was just a small portion of the half a million pcs. we once had after purchasing what was left at the factory in Glendale when they closed their doors in 1979. The rest was sold to
collectors or destroyed in a warehouse fire we had.....but that's another story.

The area surrounding Winters was almond orchards and farmland and it was roughly located between
San Francisco and Sacramento. The surface of the acre was asphalt and 4 feet below that was the finest, richest soil you can imagine outside of the California wine country....We wanted to create a park with grass pathways, herb gardens and rose bushes--surrounding it all with ornamental eucalyptus. We called it the "Franciscan Gardens".....

This landscape masterpiece was made possible by digging through the asphalt with a gas powered
auger to the rich soil, fill the holes with our plantings and adding many, many dump truck loads of weed free manure you could find this side of Kentucky. Within 14 years it was a haven and our 2 cats, a Tabby and a Siamese, thought they were in a fantasy land like that commercial on t.v. where that cat is trying to catch a butterfly.

Well I don't know if they were inviting their friends over but pretty soon we had a couple of dozen frolicking long hairs and shorthaired cats playing with reckless abandon. I wasn't the original " CAT MAN DO " but we sure had a lot of cats. There were chickens and roosters that mingled right along then one day a birds nest fell out of the trees and a baby crow with an injured wing lay at my feet. It was so helpless.

We fed it nourishment over the following months while Sandy honed her skills with the jewelry design business and "RAVEN' grew to this astonishingly beautiful black bird. My favorite black cat "MAX" would curl up in my right arm and Raven would stand on my left shoulder when we
took walks together. When I tossed him in the air to join other crows he would circle back and land on my shoe.....

Life was good...I'm sorry it had to end...

The continuing saga of our adventures will soon
be out...

LOGOWEAR and selfpromotion
by: Paul

What I've noticed about promoting your jewelry is that for a lady she can simply wear a necklace and strike up a conversation about it at work , Church or the grocery store. For a guy there is a bit of a difference especially if he's big and somewhat intimidating like myself. On a good day when I'm wearing a nice golf shirt or a suit, I can stick a few of Sandy's necklaces in my pocket and show them in an elevator when everyone is trapped but if I tried that in a pair of jeans and boots I'm only asking for trouble.

So I brainstormed a little with myself and asked myself " self...what if you had your business logo embroidered on a nice shirt and as you gaddabout town --in line at the grocery store or reading success stories about designer jewelry at a coffee shop's computer ; what kind of reaction would you get from others nearby.

So I did a little research and became a Logowear representative of one of the top companies in the country that supplies beautiful shirts for players on the PGA of America golf tour . Its a marriage made in heaven ! Instant recognition of NIKE sports with their logo embroidered on a players shirt and broadcast live on NBC or CBS everytime that player is in the hunt for a tournament victory. Its a moneymaker....

The same principle is applied to our business in jewelry if we are at shows or home parties. For the price of a nice shirt with your business logo proudly displayed on it you become a walking advertisement

You don't have to contact me at reno treasures
but I encourage you to let me help you get started with this....

If you are in the public's eye and have a smile
on your face its a great way to get noticed without having to try...

THANK YOU
