ProPay - Transactions at Shows and Parties

by Rena Klingenberg

I've been using ProPay to accept credit card payments for my jewelry for several years.

Readers often ask me these questions about using ProPay:

  1. How do you use ProPay to take credit cards at shows and parties, especially when there is no wireless connection available?

  2. Have you ever had any problems with using ProPay to accept credit cards? And are you still satisfied with their service?

  3. I know I don't need to have a credit card imprinter with ProPay transactions, but I want to use one anyway. Where can I get a credit card imprinter and supplies?

Using ProPay to Accept Credit Cards
for Your Jewelry Business

  1. At shows and parties, you can process credit card payments with your ProPay account via your cellphone or laptop computer.

You can use ProPay at shows even when you don't have either a cellphone or wireless service for your computer:

Simply write up the customer's sale as usual (I use a book of 2-part carbonless receipts, available at office supply stores), and write down the customer's name, credit card #, credit card expiration date, and zip code (ProPay requires the zip code as a security feature to process the charge).

I give them the white part of the receipt and I keep the yellow copy.

Then when you get home, log into your ProPay account online and enter the charge manually.

  2. Yes, I'm still satisfied with ProPay's service. I've been using it to accept credit cards for several years now - and I've never had any problems with their service, nor with accepting credit card payments from my customers.

If you're not already accepting credit cards for your jewelry sales, I encourage you to get going with it as soon as possible. My jewelry sales took a huge leap when my customers could start paying with plastic!

  3. You don't need to use a credit card imprinter when you use ProPay, but if you want to use one anyway, you can get the imprinter and supplies at Mr. Imprinter.

Also check eBay for credit card imprinters and supplies.

(I have no affiliation with ProPay - I'm just a satisfied customer and have found it to be a great resource for small jewelry businesses.)

Taking Credit Cards when Selling Jewelry
by: Sarah Eichermann

Rena's right on the money. ProPay is easy and reliable, and just right for small artisan businesses. During the slower months when I don't have any sales, I also don't have to pay any maintenance fees for being able to take credit cards. That was important to me, because most of my jewelry sells from October to December, and I didn't want to be paying fees the rest of the year!

ProPay is Great
by: Val

Thank you for this article, as a result I signed up for Propay. I had been looking into being able to accept plastic. This past weekend I had a show and because I could accept Visa/MC etc., I did not lose a sale and they bought more then what they would of if I did not have this service to offer. Setting up an account is very easy and the reps are helpful with your questions. I recommend this. I like the fact that there is no monthly service fee, just fees associated with usage. Thanks Rena!

Propay

Thanks for your wonderful honesty in the site - very insightful.

Can you tell me when you wrote the information about ProPay and if it still applys to today's market? I am looking for a CC terminal to use for my paintings at shows. I would be curious to know too if you use the cell phone, or imprinting w/ payment on line for your business.

Thank you for your time. Cindy

I wrote the review on ProPay Jan 2008. I am still pleased with Propay they are very good about sending statements for end of year taxes and it is so easy to access your account. They have a new tool it is called the CC reader, it stores up to 70 transactions(there is a log-in sheet to use to record information to correspond sales)you download when you get home. Check it out at Pro-Pay and as I said before the Customer Services is extremely friendly and helpful. I used the reader this past August and it worked wonderful - so convient and handy to use. If you a laptop w/wireless you can use it on-site. Right now they have a great deal on the reader.
I hope this helps. Val
