Jewelry Photography Tips
by: Rena

Hi Paul and Sandy,

I think the necklace is gorgeous!

However, as I think you hinted, the photography could do a bit more to do justice to this piece.

It looks like the photo was taken with a flash, which nearly always makes a glare on jewelry since all the surfaces are so reflective.

For a simple way to get good photos of relatively flat pieces of jewelry, try scanning your jewelry in your computer's scanner.

Or if you're using a digital camera - use a tripod, keep the flash off, and use indirect natural light.

See this collection of tips for photographing jewelry.

It usually takes some experimenting until you hit on the perfect blend of light, focal distance, and the settings on your camera.

But once you hit on that perfect combination that yields great jewelry photos, immediately write down EVERYTHING you did when you took those great pictures.

Then the next time you have a jewelry photography session you can refer back to your notes and get good shots nearly right away.

Hope this helps - oh, and I love this necklace!

I have a digital camera and I took a picture of a pearl necklace without a flash and using natural sunlight. I'll submit it in a moment
