Last year I finally got cured from a long 3 years of very bad anxiety and depression.

It was such a struggle for me, but nobody knew what was going on with me because I always had a smile on my face while the inside of me was a mess.

I didn't leave my house at all for 3 1/2 years.

Thank God that I lived with my parents because I don't how I would have survived.

I couldn't work, drive or anything.

One day I went on the computer and just searched jewelry, and I found all these videos on YouTube about how to make jewelry.

I started day by day to teach myself to make jewelry. To make the story short, Jewelry saved my life.

Why?

Well, it helped my anxiety and depression because when I make jewelry it gives me peace in my body and my brain.

The jewelry helped me 75% with my sickness, and for the rest I did have to take Lexapro which helped me fully heal.

Now when you go on my website Jewelry By Danica you can see that I have been in 5 beading magazines and my jewelry has been nothing but a success.

If you are having problems with anxiety, please start making jewelry.

It's so relaxing and if you make a mistake, so what, don't beat yourself up - just try again.

I love being a jewelry designer.

Did I get out of the house?

Last year I took a trip to Florida.

I also have a part-time job as a hair stylist now.

It's all because of making jewelry.

Thank you for reading my story, and DON'T EVER GIVE UP! ;-)

I'm so glad to hear you found your way out of the darkness. And congrats on having your designs published in magazines!

I truly believe that jewelry making is one of the best therapies in the world. As you say, getting absorbed in the creativity puts your body and mind in a different state.

How many of the world's problems could be solved or avoided if everyone sat down and made a necklace or earrings every now and then!

Thank you so much for sharing your story of healing, hope, and success, Danica!

It saved my life too !

My wife makes the jewelry when she isn't working over 50 hours a week. She is out in the public and dresses up very professionally with a different outfit and necklace everyday. She can't shut her mind off so she makes jewelry to unwind when she's at home. People always compliment her regarding her necklaces and want to buy one just like it ... so she asked me to start taking pictures and get a website at home to display her work ...
I've been taking blurry pictures now for 5 years, never go out in public but its a work in progress for me " to get that perfect picture ."
Its almost spiritual in my quest !

Thanks for sharing your story...

Hi Danica,

I also suffer from depression and anxiety; and making my art gives me great peace, just like you. When I am creating, my mind feels so much relief. That's why I love it so much! It's very healing for me. Along with my medication and counseling, art has saved me, too.

Not many people talk openly about mental illness, and I just want to thank you for sharing your story. If more people talked about their mental illnesses, the stigma would lessen significantly, and more people might seek help.

May God bless you as you continue on your healing journey!

I feel your pain (and relief from it!)

I have also dealt with anxiety and also physical limitations (fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue) and making my jewelry has definitely helped me cope with all of the challenges in my life!

When I'm in my jewelry studio, all the troubles swirling around in my head just calm down, and I'm at peace. It's amazing what a creative outlet can do for a person.

I work a very stressful day job (luckily from home) and work very long hours... so finding the time to work on my art is tricky, but I'm finding a way! I have sold at craft fairs and jewelry shows, but now am finally getting a web site up, hopefully soon. It is my dream to finally quit the day job and focus on my jewelry full-time. then I would truly be at peace!

Thanks for sharing your story!

I started making jewelry while my mom was miles away battling cancer. I was only able to be with her during the weekends but during the week after work my mind would go in one depressing direction. I some how ran into a bead store and made a pair of earrings. I am self taught but it just came natural to me. The second item I made was a bracelet for my mom. I have made so many things since the first pair of earrings I do not know where I would be without this outlet in my life. My mom lost her battle with cancer but she lives with me everyday. I started my jewelry business two weeks after she past and named it after her Katie Jeans Jewelry. My mom is always with me like you jewelry design has saved my life.

Another Saved by Jewely Making

Danica, I guess I didn't know there were so many of us out here saved by the creativity of jewelry making. I have a friend that was thinking about doing a local show. She didn't think she'd have enough items made in time. I had been very depressed at the time, so I told her to show me, I could help her get ready. Well after 1-night of instruction I was at the local craft store buying my own tools!
That was 3 years ago. I have a bead room in my house, I have repeat clients, we do certain shows every year, I have God-sized ideas for jewelry making and designing. I have Peace beyond all understanding. God's Peace. I thank God for bringing my friend to me with her audible thought of wanting to try to do that show--where would I be now?

Me too...

I recently shared my story on here, I didn't go into much detail - but the truth is that jewellery is so therapeutic, your story and all the other responses prove it!

A sudden illness also led me to discover jewellery making - I'm on a lot of medication, from morphine and now Oxycontin - I struggle to concentrate on them, but making jewellery has enabled me to find a way to focus and create.
Although I am still pretty housebound, being able to create something new on a daily basis and then being able to share it over the internet has helped my depression enormously!
What felt like a desperate, dead end situation one year ago, where I didn't know how I was going to be able to survive, afford to live and to realize that my career as a film maker and photographer was over - has been turned around due to making jewellery.
It's given me hope, the chance to still create and have a career that I can be proud of and above all else enjoy!

I hope that when I am more mobile I'll be able to organise a jewellery course to help other people that are suffering with depression and anxiety - art is such a great therapy in itself - jewellery making is so accessible to all, that I think it would be a huge benefit medically.

Thanks again for sharing your story, and all the other people that have responded too...
