A Cure for
Jewelry Designer's Block

© 2004 by Rickina Velte; all rights reserved

"Where do they come up with that stuff???" Ever hear other jewelry designers or customers asking that question? Are you in a design rut or in need of fresh concepts and ideas? Finding your inspiration is closer and easier than you think.

It happens to the best of us - we get caught in a slump and we wonder how we ever got here. You've got all your wonderful supplies, your customer base has just started to become a "base" - and you can't think of anything new to create!

Well, don't panic. Just knowing that it happens to most every jewelry designer should make you feel better. Here are some suggestions and ideas for getting back to your creative groove.

First we must understand that creativity is all around us. Everywhere we look there's something creative to admire. Sometimes just taking a step back and looking at everyday things can help.

Occasionally I leaf through a car magazine or an interior design magazine and find all kinds of ideas. Wait, you say, a car magazine? Yup, I've even gotten ideas from the design of tires and wheels before. Magazines that aren't necessarily linked to jewelry can be a great inspiration, and help in sparking that creative flame.

Of course we've all looked through the latest Vogue or Cosmo to see what the famous people are wearing, but how 'bout putting your own personal spin on an overdone design. Instead of circles, use oblong ovals and dangle them horizontally. Instead of polished stones, use uncut raw ones instead.

The options are endless. Maybe instead of using sterling silver or gold, use niobium or stainless steel - or a combination of other readily available metals. With a little research and open-mindedness you'll be on your way to creating jaw-dropping jewelry once again.

Remember your designs got you to where you are now, or where you're trying to go. Re-evaluate your past designs or revamp a popular theme, stay on the lookout for new creative design ideas, and the jewelry designer juices will flow again.

Author Rickina Velte of Spipo Designs creates unusual jewelry for an eclectic spirit. Her exclusive handmade jewelry designs include semi- and precious stones, freshwater pearls, lampwork and Czech glass beads, and precious metals. Rickina's designs are fun to wear, splashy, and creative!
