Having been in the fashion jewelry industry for several years, I've had the opportunity to merchandize my company's jewelry collections many times.

It sounds like a simple task, but it has challenges and risks associated with choosing products that will be popular while remaining in line with the company's image and strengths.

Here is a simple, but key strategy that has helped make my online jewelry business a success:

Base Your Jewelry Collection
on What You Would Buy Yourself

As simple as it sounds, many people don't abide by this simple practice.

I can remember several times hearing people giving advice on how I should diversify my jewelry collection into pieces that I might not like, but others may.

There is no doubt that everyone has different tastes when it comes to jewelry and style.

But attempting to include a wide spectrum of jewelry often confuses the customer, and makes it difficult for them to fully realize what the website is selling.

Having a broad range of styles can also lead to a large inventory of unsold goods dipping into your profits.

I try to specialize in a particular look, which may not be for everyone, but can create a strong following among those sharing that style.

When I merchandize a new collection, every piece of jewelry is carefully selected to ensure that it meets the overall look and style I'm looking for.

I come across nice pieces all the time, but these may not be a good match for my company and hence are not selected.

Listen to yourself when buying, to ensure that every piece you purchased is something that you might buy yourself.

Listening to other salespeople, friends and family about what to buy can often dilute your collection and reduce your confidence with the end customer when selling the product.
