Transporting jewelry displays to your shows and parties A tip from Lynn Bowen of HaitiCrafts: Here's a handy way to pack your jewelry displays when going to a show: I like to have a lot of my displays already filled with jewelry so they are easy to put out and take down. I have found that plastic wrap is my friend. If I wrap it around and around my rotating earring stand, it holds the earrings firmly in place and none fall off. (I use mostly fish-hook earwires because they are cheap, but they can fall off the cards.) I do the same thing with my rotating wire jewelry stands and even my single necklace busts. That way the item I am going to display is connected to the display. I don't have to hunt around for the right piece. Plastic wrap also makes great packing material for small, fragile items as it is more flexible than bubble wrap. Just crush it up and there you go.

Design Solutions Using Large Lampwork Beads From Melinda Jernigan of MP Designs Jewelry: I was having fits with a large center hole on a lampwork bead. The bead kept wobbling and not staying centered on a headpin when I tried to make a pair of earrings. In the past I would try to use seed beads, tiny silver or gold beads to fill the larger hole in the bead, but at times it seemed too hard to keep the beads centered in my projects.
Amazingly this technique was cheap and effective! Jewelry design and custom pieces are my passion after the love of my family and husband, but when I discover something useful when making jewelry I thought it would be great to share. Blessings and happy beading, Melinda Jernigan

Putting together jewelry-making kits A reader named Roslyn inquired about how to put together jewelry-making kits for workshops. When I make kits for workshops, I just try to put myself in the customer's shoes - what would be exciting to find in the kit? I recently put together 15 bracelet kits for a Girl Scout jewelry badge session I'll be doing in a couple of weeks. Here's what I did: I had the scout leader write down each girl's two favorite colors on a separate slip of paper along with the girl's name. I put each kit together in its own mini-ziplock bag, along with the slip of paper that has the girl's name and desired colors, so they'll be easy to hand out when we're ready to get started. Using a beadboard to measure how many inches of beads I put into each kit, I used beads from my own (enormous!) gemstone bead stash to create a nice variety of colors, shapes, etc. in the desired color combos. I often tossed in a few hematite, onyx, or pearl beads for color contrast if the colors they chose needed "a little extra something". I also tried to make sure there was at least one cool focal bead in each bracelet kit. Although I know each bracelet only needs 4 to 6 inches of beads for girls of this age, I put about 8 or 9 inches of beads in each kit, so the girls will have a nice selection to design with, and they'll get to take the extra beads home with them for other projects. Into each kit I also put a 10" strand of beading wire with one end of a small sterling silver toggle clasp already attached to it (I will help them put on the other end of the clasp when they're finished). This is a very simple version of kits, done for elementary-school age girls, but you can use it as a springboard for creating your own kit projects. An ethical jeweler In the current issue of Jewelry Business Success News, I wrote about the Ethical Jewelry market, and how your jewelry business can be in tune with it. Here's a message I received from Kari Bryde of Novel Approach Designs, a jewelry artist who's basing much of her work on sustainability: ------------------- I've been doing this for two years (I call it "Repurposing"TM) - you can read a bit about sustainable design on my website. Jewelry design is a bit new to the idea environmental ethics; although many other design sectors have been practicing the efforts for quite some time. I first learned of this responsibility a designer has when I was getting my BS in Interior Design and that is why I chose to carry it over to my jewelry design business two years ago. Kari's "Repurposing"TM pieces are outstanding examples of what I referred to in my article! :o)

Jewelry website tip - keep pages fresh to inspire customer confidence It's a good idea to update all the "customer service" oriented pages of your website frequently. Major overhauls aren't necessary - just little touches like regularly updating your "About the Artist" page, freshening up a few sentences to clarify your business policies, updating your list of upcoming jewelry shows, fixing typos, etc. Customers feel more comfortable shopping online at websites where these important pages appear to be fresh, professional looking, and evolving along with the rest of the business. Time slips by quickly, and in the fast-moving online world, a page of your website can seem (or truly be!) outdated in 6 to 12 months.

You know you've been making jewelry too long if... Jewelry artist Lanicia sent in this message: I had to laugh while reading the article "You Know You've Been Making Jewelry Too Long If ...." Opportunities at large companies Here's a great tip from D. Brown of DBrownDesigns: One of the best places I have found to sell jewelry is on large company intranets. If you have friends that work at a large corporation, often they have an internal intranet on which they list things for sale. See if your friend is able to submit pictures, descriptions, and links to your jewerly. Or maybe advertise a home jewelry show for this friend. Also check to see if they allow lunch hour shows. Go in and set up at 10 a.m. for a long lunch hour show on payday! They may also have a not-for-profit company they like to sponsor, so you can always find out about that and offer so much of a percentage for the not-for-profit. Don't forget to thank your friend with a discount on next purchase or small trinket!

Working with gold wire Patricia Swayze of Patti M. Designs shares this tip: When making wire-wrapped jewelry with 14k gold-filled or 14k, 18k gold wire, always use a jewelry cloth to clean your wire before you wrap it. Sometimes the gold is very dirty and you don't realize this - and once you wrap it, it's difficult to get it shiny again. It will have a greenish tint to it. This is especially critical when working with gold wire because of the expense involved. It can take up to 20 wipes before it is really clean. If you notice that your hands are constantly black-looking then you need to wipe it many times and wash your hands before starting to make your jewelry.
Letting jewelry components tell you how they want to be designed Here's a great tip from Tricia of Leo Buche Tile Works: When designing a piece of wearable art, lay a neutral fabric out and place lines of beads, crystals and metals out on it. You may find that these items have a way of showing you what and how they can be arranged in your design. I have used this practice with much success!

It's all about people Elise from EJ Brierley sent in this wonderful tip to keep in mind: When selling jewellery, remember that it is all about the customer. So when you write a sales blurb or section, remember to use the term 'you' applying to the customer. Do not focus on what your business excels in, but how the customer can benefit from what you do for them. For example, consider: "The company boasts excellent communication between itself and customers to maintain high customer satisfaction" and "Here at (the company) we value your thoughts and opinions. If you are not happy, we have work to do to ensure you are."

Earring loss prevention tip Here's a tip from Carole Lou: On "fish-hook" earwires, gently squeeze the back and front of the earwire together, making the hook's opening narrower, so the earwires hug the earlobe more closely after they're inserted. The earwires won't fall out easily this way. I used to lose many earrings, but I haven't lost any since I've started doing this.
Give customers more than they expect A tip from Charlene from AndersonShea: Under-promise and over-deliver. If a customer needs something tomorrow, kindly tell them it will take two days and then have it done a day early. You'll look like a hero(ine) and you know they will tell others about your great service.
Free advertising A tip from Tiffany of BabiiBoo: A great way to advertise your jewelry is by wearing it, everywhere you go. So many people have asked me about my jewelry. They start the sales pitch for you. And away you go.

Easy sales tax tip Keri of Kreations by Keri shares her method for quickly figuring sales tax: I just started doing local arts & crafts shows for my new jewelry business. During my search for shows I found the easiest tax look up sheet ever, through the Craftlister website: You enter the Sales Tax, set your Max Dollar amount, check the boxes for Dollar Breakdown and Show Tax, then Update Chart. You can then copy and paste it into MS Word to be printed out - or you can print it as is. This has been invaluable to me at shows, and whenever figuring sales tax. I can just total up the sale, look at the sheet, and provide the customer the total with tax - without fumbling with a calculator. It's been a GREAT TOOL! Plus if you know all your upcoming shows and the tax that is charged, you can then create all of the look-up sheets, and store then with the show information, and you'll always be ready for the next show.

Include sales tax in your jewelry pricing? A reader named Terry says, I have seen some people who sell craft items and jewelry with sales tax included in the price, so that the item's price + sales tax is the price on your price tag. If you price your work this way, you should state this on a small sign on your table. However, it involves a little more work to figure out the price to put on your price tag this way, and then to figure out how much tax you owe on your quarterly sales tax returns.

Big, beautiful photos of your jewelry can help your sales Great info from Rebecca Fransway of Enchantment Vintage Costume Jewelry: Large, detailed pictures attract shoppers and sell jewelry. Now that good photo editing software as well as DSL and cable internet are available, there's no need to frustrate a prospective buyer with miserly images. All you need is:
Keywords, of course, are a necessary means to get prospective buyers to your site, but after that, your gallery pictures will be the first means to attract buyers into clicking, then buying. Your gallery picture should be a minimum of 200 pixels tall or wide, to 270, depending on the size of the jewelry. You can limit file size by reducing the DPI (pixels per inch) to 50 or less. You can have 20 or 30 gallery pictures per page at this size, and most buyers will have no trouble loading your web site. You can use your photo editor to adjust pixel measurements and DPI file sizes. Your gallery is only the beginning. Users should be able to click for details and get larger pictures. These can and should be much larger than actual size - just be sure to give the actual dimensions in your description. Some dealers also show an "actual size" photo along with the dimensions of the piece. Try it, and then be on the lookout for more sales!
No more messy tape when wire wrapping Great tip from Jeff Tullock of We Wrap It Up: I have been doing wire jewelry wrap for several years now and I hate using tape to hold my wire in position until I can get a wrap on it. I was in the veggie section at my local grocery store one day and notice those green tie wraps for the vegetable bags. I asked the grocer if he would mind if I took a few extra, and he said to take as many as I wanted. Bread ties are now a regular in my tool box. You can cut them into small 1" lengths and wrap them around the wire as you would tape. Use your pliers to pinch them down tight and you are ready to wrap. The best thing about the bread or vegetable ties is, they can be used over and over, no messy glue to clean off of your jewelry, and they are cheap. But the most convenient thing about the tie is you can slide them the length of the wire because they have no glue they will move wherever you want them. Ever had to re-tape a piece because the tape is dead on the spot you want a wrap? Give bread ties a chance - I think you will like them! PS - When you are at the local bead store giving a class, bread ties make you look very smart.

Organizing jewelry supplies can help with pricing your finished pieces Andrea of Peluche Designs shares this tip: With just starting our jewelry business, my mother and I found organizing our beads and tools was the most important thing to get us going. My mother bought about 10 tackle boxes from a local hobby store to put our beads in. Then we placed little stickers on each division of the box, listing where we bought the beads and how much each bead cost. This made pricing our finished jewelry so much simpler because the prices of the raw materials were already there. We just needed to do some simple math, and our pricing was done!

At home before you go to the show, string all the beads you want to match onto a piece of stretch bead cord and wear them as a bracelet. Also appreciate the resources you make available to us stone nuts. Not into the business per se, because I'm basically a stone person, fascinated by the stones themselves. Thing is, after you accumulate a bunch, it occurs to one that you have to do something with them...... Though I haven't had to Christmas or Birthday shop for a number of years. One angle I've come up with - a lot of men are indifferent to jewelry. As far as a gift giving, and possibly a selling angle, they'll get gifts they can give to their significant others. Example: Last year for Christmas, gave best buddy a pendant with a silver Roman coin mounted in it. The reverse showed the Roman personalization of Victory, which in the Latin of the time was "Victoria"..... Just happpens to be his wife's name. How cool is it to have a pendant made from a 1700 year old coin, with your name on it.....? Please keep the newletter coming. Regards,

Another jewelry artist's experience with haggling After reading Cindy Cherrington's recent article on Haggling with Customers, Donna of The Artisans at Mooseworks wrote in to share a haggling experience of her own: Yesterday, for the first time, I had a customer come in at the end of the show and ask me if I'd take $5 less than marked for a piece of jewelry because it was the end of the show ("so you don't have to take it home"). I was prepared, having gotten advice from a friend years before to not lower my prices at the end of a show. I politely said, no, that I would simply keep it in stock and be able to sell it at a future show. She bought the bracelet at full price!

Stone setting tip Alex of F Jewelry Store shares this great tip: If you do much stone setting, buy a complete set of stone-setting gravers. There are six in a set and all are sharpened and mounted in seasoned hardwood handles. Graver points can be resharpened with silicon carbide grinding stones and fine honed and polished with Arkansas stone lubricated with a light oil. Keep the gravers cool while working with them.

Online video clips for your jewelry website Have you noticed the recent boom in online video clips? All kinds of sites are beginning to feature video - usually to entertain, educate, or sell something to their audiences. People love to watch video. Wherever there's a television or any other form of moving video image, people automatically watch it - even if the video is only a commercial. So how can you use this popular online-video trend to your advantage in your jewelry business? Here are a few idea starters:
The possibilities for video are endless, and there are lots of resources on the Web to help you get started. So what makes a successful video? It should interesting and useful to your viewers, and brief enough not to slow down their computers. Also, if you're a funny person, you might just make a humorous video clip that gets passed around the Web like wildfire - and your site could receive an enormous wave of traffic as a result!
Pinpoint jewelry trends as they happen You don't need to have your own jewelry website to benefit from doing some keyword research. Online keyword research can help you stay on top of trends by showing you the exact jewelry items or features people are actually searching for. Let's see what trends we can spot in some of the top jewelry-related keyword searches on the Web this month. Here are a few of the top results that popped up for these searches on four different keywords: Jewelry: Necklace: Bracelet: Earrings: Can you spot some trends we've just uncovered? Keywords I see repeated include: gold, turquoise, hoop earrings, and pearls. And in the bracelets category, many searches are for bracelets that have some sort of message or meaning. You can do some quick, fun and free jewelry keyword research of your own at http://inventory.overture.com.
Customer psychology and selling jewelry Returning guest author Pamela Vale of Creative Potential is back with some helpful things she's learned: Eight Useful Lessons in Retailing Jewelry
New way to use Silica Gel packs Allison Dow of Estate Beads shares this handy "reduce, reuse, recycle" hint: You know those little white paper packets that come in the bottom of all types of boxes, usually labeled "Gel - don't eat"? They are used to absorb moisture in packaging. Save them! They are also very useful to keep and store with your jewelry and jewelry supplies. Put a few in with your sterling and plated items and you'll find they help reduce tarnishing!
Beading inspiration - how to keep up with all of the ideas! Melinda Jernigan of MP Designs Jewelry has a great system for not losing track of her beading inspirations: I have been creating and selling jewelry for almost two years. I have so many creative ideas and not enough time to make everything! Most of my inspiration comes from digging through and sorting my beads. Many ideas just "pop" out while I sort, so I keep handy some extra-small zip bags (often the ones I have from my bead suppliers - a great way to recycle) and put in my inspiration beads to keep them together while I finish sorting. This way I can keep a to-do section on my work table and the beads stay together, ready to design. So many nights I dream about beads - I know, pretty consumed :) - and then when I get up and am ready to bead, I can pull out my idea in a neat zip bag ready to go. This system works great when traveling too. My husband does all of the driving on long trips or vacations, so I get my bead projects ready to go. It makes it so easy to finish some of my projects I have had to put aside. I hope you love beading as much as I do! Blessings, Melinda Jernigan.
It's in the details Randi-Sue Deckard of Designing-Diva shares her insight: Want to give your customers more? It's all in their perceived value of the item you're selling; it's all in the details. The key is presentation! It doesn't have to cost a bundle, but it can make a piece seem more valuable to your potential customer base. I have gotten extremely creative because I did not have extra funds when I initially started up. I've used a variety of props to display my designs. Tree branches, dried flowers, candles, vases (great for necklaces), etc. Often these interesting, creative displays are what have drawn people to my table - and once they get close, they see the DETAILS. I use scrapbooking supplies to make one-of-a-kind jewelry tags. I always include a description of the piece, gemstone lore facts, price, and my contact information. I am always amazed at how many people comment on these tags that take hardly any time to make up. I always have at least one or two items displayed in a gift box with fun colored tissue paper that I purchase from the local dollar store. I also handstamp little notecards and have my contact information on the back to be included with the giftbox. I put a small sign next to this display that states, "Free gift box and personal gift card with every purchase." The word FREE is amazingly powerful. I have had great success with these little details, and I'm always thinking on how I can raise my customers' perceived value of my pieces.
Tip for showing your jewelry to a shop or gallery Christy of Shouting Stones recommends: When showing your jewelry to a store or gallery, group pieces by color and theme. It helps the owner decide how they can merchandise it if they can immediately see the clusters.
Who's your target market? Creating jewelry for a specific group of people is an excellent strategy for developing a loyal customer base. Craft Business Home has a helpful article on defining your target market.
Rotating jewelry supply bin Cindy Cherrington of CC Creations shares a nifty, space-saving solution for jewelry supply storage: I found a double-sided storage bin unit (table top size) at a discount store. It's made of opaque clear plastic, about 4 rows tall, with wide drawers that are really tilt-out compartments. On the front of each drawer I put a label listing its contents. But the best part is that I put this double-sided unit on a lazy susan, so that I can easily turn it to get to the contents on the other side. This is great for when you're a little short on space!
Bartering jewelry for things you can't afford Melissa of Stones on String has a great tip for using your jewelry as currency: One thing that benefits jewelry designers and business owners is to barter for services. I have joined a few online forums and worked "trades" for not only goods but also services I desperately needed as a new business owner, that I simply could not afford with my very tight budget! For example, I have traded jewelry from my line for services such as website banners and business card design. These services were provided by graphic designers who would normally charge a fee but were willing to work a trade instead. A perfect "win-win" situation!

Don't delay - access to "My Modular Jewelry Display" ends tonight My ebook "Ultimate Guide to Your Profitable Jewelry Booth" has had a far more successful first week than I ever imagined it would. My sincere thanks to all who have been downloading and reading it. Here's more of what readers are saying:
Today is the last day the additional special report will be available for free when you purchase "Ultimate Guide to Your Profitable Jewelry Booth". After midnight U.S. Pacific Time on July 12, this additional 7-page special report - which details all the elements of the successful jewelry display system I use, and why it works - will no longer accompany the main ebook. Don't delay. You'll find the main e-book and the special report at: http://www.jewelry-books.com/jewelry-booth.html
A jewelry artist's blog brings traffic to her jewelry site Arriel of Ari Designs shares this great tip for your jewelry website success: Blogging for jewelry designers is a definite plus. My website is new and I found attaching my 360 Yahoo Blog is attracting more readers. I am actually beginning to think it's working the other way around; meaning, people are seeing my blog first and then going to my website. You can add your "homepage", or website, to the bottom of the 360 Blog. I am also able to photostream my designs on the blog, as well as other photos of personal and business interest. It's a good way to combine it all and I think makes it more personal also. Who knows what it might lead to, but for right now I'm just having fun with it. Note from Rena: This is an excellent example of how you can use the power of blogging tools to enhance your jewelry business. If you're interested in getting into jewelry blogging, you'll find more success tips in this article: Jewelry Business Blogging Success Tips.

Beads, beads everywhere - and I can't find a one! Szarka from Turquoise Magpie sent in a great, easy bead organizing tip: I discovered a great way to organize my beads and have them where I can see them. I purchased a bag of metal shower curtain hooks from the local hardware store and I hung strands of beads on them. I place all the similar colored strands on one hook. All the blues together. All the yellows together. Then I nailed some finishing nails into the side of my work bench and I hung them all there. I also have a book shelf in front of my bench and I did the same. Now when I am making a piece of jewelry I can see what colors and shapes I have while I am in the design stages. I cut the strand open, take off the number of beads I need, and tie it up again or use a crimp bead to close it up so I can hang it right back onto the hook. No more digging through bead boxes. Well I still have those for beads that are not strung so I labelled those clearly with what is inside. My jewelry making is much happier now!
I've been hard at work finishing up my ebook, "Ultimate Guide to Your Profitable Jewelry Booth". That's why you haven't heard much from me lately! I'm just now finalizing the book. Much of the information in it has never been published anywhere else before. And I've held no secrets back - this ebook is your complete step-by-step success guide to selling your jewelry at shows, fairs, and festivals. It's been reviewed by seven experts, and it will be available right after the Fourth of July weekend. Reviewer Jill Sharp of Blue Piranha Jewelry says, "This is THE reference book for every jewelry designer who has ever set up, or is considering setting up, a booth at a retail event. Rena covers everything: show prep, display, jurying, pricing, marketing, and so much more. I’ve been doing shows for several years, and found several tips in this book that will make my shows even easier. It’s like having a great business partner by your side!" Lorri Ely of Making Jewelry says, "As an experienced jewelry designer myself, I was amazed at all the great new ideas I found in this book — showing that there’s always room to learn new things! I’ll be implementing some of her ideas at my next show. This book is a must have if you plan to sell jewelry at shows - it is jam packed with useful information that will increase your sales, help in selecting the right shows (and avoiding the wrong ones) and much more. What a great resource - I wish I'd had a book like this when I was first getting started." Look for my announcement about the publication of this ebook on July 5!

Excellent idea for a free gift Sandi Kuckenbecker of The Jewelry Gallerie shares her excellent method for giving customers a useful "freebie" that surely helps build her business. Sandi writes: In addition to Jennifer Chiostri's suggestion on May 23 about providing extra customer service, I would like to pass along another idea. I purchased Brilliant polishing cloths (12" x 7.5") for less than $2 each, and cut them into 8 segments. They fit nicely into the 2" x 3" ziplock bagettes many of us use to store beads and other jewelry supplies. Along with the mini-polishing cloth I include a cut-down business card with the following information: The Jewelry Gallerie
www.thejewelrygallerie.com and a small "gift with purchase" graphic. Total cost to me is about $0.30. Hopefully customers will hold on to the cloth in its bag and probably keep my card handy with both my business name and website (coming soon).

Custom jewelry design niche idea Nearly everyone who loves earrings has at least one lone earring sitting in her jewelry box, whose mate has been somehow lost. Unfortunately, it's usually impossible to obtain a matching replacement for the lost earring, so the remaining earring sits, unwearable, in your jewelry box. Here's a great way to make a leftover dangle earring wearable, and offer a custom jewelry service that makes your customers very happy: Just remove the earwire and you can often turn the dangle into a great necklace component that's really fun to design around! Many times I've made necklaces for people, using their lone earring as a pendant or focal bead. Last night I made two of these necklaces for a customer. One was made with a long silver dangle earring inlaid with abalone, which I used as a pendant on a strand of onyx, abalone, and amethyst beads. I love the way it turned out. The other was a tiny silver, marcasite, and crystal dangle, which is now the pendant on a dainty choker of mini freshwater pearls highlighted with a few crystal beads. People absolutely love being able to wear a beloved lone earring again, and this is a wonderful "jewelry recycling" service to offer.
Profitable jewelry deliveries If you deliver local jewelry orders in person, you may have an opportunity to sell additional jewelry during the delivery. A customer who has just ordered or bought some of your jewelry is definitely predisposed to purchase more of it, and selling extra pieces to her can be almost too easy! Also, sometimes other people are present when you make the delivery - especially if you're delivering it to your customer's workplace. It's a good idea to bring a selection of additional jewelry in with you, because nearly always the other people present will say, "Oh, that's beautiful - I'd love to see more of your jewelry." Or your customer will enjoy looking at the new stuff as you complete the transaction. Sometimes you'll wind up having a profitable mini jewelry party on the spot. By being prepared with a selection of extra jewelry, you can often ring up enough additional sales to put a big smile on your face!
Party swap If you do home jewelry parties and know someone who does some other type of home party (Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, Stampin' Up, etc.), try hosting parties for each other. I have a friend who's a Mary Kay lady, and a few years ago she and I hosted very successful parties for each other's products. I rounded up about a dozen friends who attended her Mary Kay party at my house, and she invited a similar number of people to attend my jewelry party at her house. We both experienced higher than normal sales. I think it may have been because the party guests felt so comfortable with us - we were perceived as another friend at the party instead of as an outside "saleslady", which sometimes happens.
Jewelry website building tip Here's a tip from Laura James of Laura James Jewelry: After receiving quotes from $2500 to $5000 to build my website, I took matters into my own hands and did some research to find another way to build a fantastic site for a more reasonable amount. I found Citymaker.com - an online web building service that gives you the choice of doing it yourself for under $20 or paying them to build it for you (around $250). I chose to build it myself, and five minutes later my professional-grade website was underway. If you don't have the time to dedicate to building it yourself (which they actually make quite easy but it can be time consuming if you are a perfectionist or have a particular look in mind) I highly recommend allowing them to do it for you. All in all, I have been more than pleased with the results, fast customer service on their part, and nominal fee for a site that rivals those that cost ten times as much!
Charm Factory to Donate 5000 Pink Ribbon Charms Angie from Charm Factory sent in this announcement: ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Charm Factory, a company that specializes in sterling silver charms, beads and awareness ribbons made in the USA, is offering to donate 5000 of its new pink ribbons to non-profit organizations and fundraisers working to find a cure for cancer or supporting those touched by cancer. The new charms are silver filled and very light and flat. A beautiful touch on bracelets and other creations, they are also the perfect size to place inside fundraising letters as a freemium. (A "freemium" is a promotional giveaway.) Each year, Charm Factory helps defray costs for a number of jewelry makers and beaders who donate their time and energy to worthy causes. "We are giving away 5000 of the new pink ribbon charms in an effort to do our part to help find a cure and support those touched by cancer," said Charm Factory manager Angie Beauchamp. "We hope that a variety of non-profit groups will be able to use these ribbons as a fundraiser to benefit their organizations and the important work they do in our communities." Organizations, their representatives, and individual fundraisers who are interested in receiving free ribbons may submit a request by visiting www.charmfactory.com and clicking on the "Free Pink Ribbons" link. The deadline for requests is August 1, 2006. A committee of Charm Factory employees will review submissions and distribute the ribbons to deserving recipients. No phone calls please.
Recommending books to your jewelry students Nancy Kamp of Very Shiny Objects sent in this tip for jewelry workshops: Along with my custom jewelry business, I teach jewelry making classes as part of my position as a Luxe Jewels consultant. I always take a copy of my favorite bead book to show the students. I tell them there's more information about it and other books on my website. This not only reminds the class to visit my site, but has also resulted in more than a few bead book orders since my site is affiliated with both Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Extra customer service Jennifer Chiostri of The Birds and the Beads recommends this additional special step in your jewelry packaging: Take the time to show you customers you care. I include a jewelry care sheet with each piece purchased. Customers love that personal touch!
Quick and cheap necklace display A reader named Susan sent in this jewelry display tip: I bought some 8" x 10" plexiglass photo frames and made slipcovers for them with black felt, to turn them into necklace holders. I folded the felt in half over the top of the frame to measure both sides evenly. Then I sewed up the sides, turned it inside out, and slipped it over the frame. They are quick and easy to make, and look professionally done, and you can use any fabric.
Bakelite precautions A huge thanks to R.E. Rourke, for sending in this cautionary tip regarding Bakelite: A word to the wise about testing Bakelite's authenticity: Bakelite was not only made of thermoplastics and carbolic acid compounds; for awhile even asbestos fibers were used in the manufacture of bakelite substitutes / competitors. So if you want to remake, repair, etc bakelite and you drill, dremel, or otherwise sand and abrade it, use a mask ... not a cheap paper mask but at least a N95 OSHA rated one (not the kind with filter cartridges, however ideal they may be, just an N-95 is suitable). Wipe down and dispose of all rags, cleaning implements, etc. that come into contact with the stuff during cleanup. So don't use your 3M rewashable microfiber cloth for this job - a paper towe, or old t-shirt will do. If you have asthma, asthmatic kids, or pets, don't remake the Bakelite and risk a potential attack - it's simply not worth it. Finally, don't submerge the bakelite piece in Oxyclean, or any anhydrous hydrogen peroxide based cleaner, though the product does wonders for cleaning, hairbrushes, tiles, mildew, fabric stains that are set in, etc. Bakelite reacts negatively with the peroxide and releases, or can release noxious gases that aren't good for man nor beast. And if it's a utensil made of Bakelite, or one of its clones, the oxy___ may damage the metal as well. Happy metalsmithing, jewelrymaking, or whatever it is you do to release your creative energies.
Free jewelry component management software Rachel of Crystal Inspirations sent in this tip: There is a free jewelry component management software program called Art Organizer from Art Affair Software that helps you to keep track of your component inventory and costs. It has some basic reporting abilities and vendor tracking also. I've already started using this program and have found it to be very good and very easy to use! They also have a 30 free trial for another program called Art Affair which will also automatically calculate your component costs and your time for your finished pieces, will give you a suggested sale price, track consignments, and gives you a space where you can record instructions for making the piece, including photos, for classes, articles, etc. It also has an Event module to track sales and expenses for a show so you can get a better idea of how profitable a show was for you. Of course it has more features too, but those are the ones I would find most useful. I have not tried this one yet, but I plan on purchasing it in the near future. The $139 price tag seems very reasonable to me...especially considering the time it will save me. You can get more information and download the programs from www.artaffairsoftware.com.

A tip for custom tools Roxanne from Roxanne Beebe Designs sent in this excellent tip: I am a wax carver. I prefer the hard purple Kerr wax, available in a variety of shapes and sizes, including ring blanks, bracelet blanks, and different thicknesses of blocks. After over 30 years of experience, I've noticed something. If you love to carve, and just can't find the carving tool you're REALLY looking for, have one made for you by a machinist. You can make a prototype in wax, and have them make it for you in hardened steel. I have a custom made, basic carving tool which I've been using since 1977. It was actually a thoughtful and intelligent gift, and it's my main tool. And don't forget to keep your steel tools clean and dry, protected from humidity. With the right tools, you can do anything.

You can receive email notification about upcoming shows and events in your area by signing up for Event Lister's free listings. I've been receiving their list for quite awhile, and it's always full of a variety of festivals, shows, and concerts nearby - many of which I would never have heard of otherwise. I've found it to be a very useful resource.

Women are choosing right hand rings of all styles, with or without gems. If you design rings, you may want to research this rapidly growing market more thoroughly.

Jewelry photography quick reference Leslie of Leslie Anne Jewelry shares her solution for getting good jewelry photos - a workable system developed by a lot of trial and error on her part: I have spent many hours experimenting in this department and have definitely made some huge improvements through lots of research and trial and error. I hope that my hours will help save the sanity of others with similar issues. The most important thing I did was to buy a photo box. This is a white, nylon box I picked up on e-bay for about $50. This alone made huge improvements in my photos. Lighting, as you may imagine, is very important. I use two 5000k daylight bulbs and place one on each side of the box. (I got my bulbs at a light bulb store which I didn't even know I had in my town until I looked up "lighting" in the phonebook). From the front I place an LED for sparkle (I actually use my headlamp for this, but I know there are more technical sparkle lights you can buy). It's very important to look into the camera when positioning the sparkle light so you can get the best shine with less glare. Then I manually set my camera somewhere between 1 and 2 EV (exposure value). This will brighten up your shots and make the white background look more white and less grey. Lastly, putting your camera on "spot" mode will help to give it that really focused look with a blurry background. Remember, don't set all of your settings and then put the camera back on auto. I lost a day's work that way. Quick reference:
Tip for earring cards Stacy of Staliza Jewelry shares her discovery for making your own earring cards: Craft stores sell cardstock bookmarks that are perfect for earring display cards! Fold one in half and mark the holes in one for a template. Use your template to punch holes through several bookmarks at a time with a clean, sharp instrument like a needle. When you fold them in half, they're the perfect size to fit into 2" x 3" earring boxes or plastic zip-close bags. To display these cards, I used a tall wrought iron CD tower rack. It has a small footprint on your display table and a lot of height! Two cards fit across per side. I closed my cards with double-sided tape or velcro. People lifted the cards to see the price and information on the back. They didn't blow off in the wind and they made a nice, tall display for the table!
Decide where you want your jewelry business to go - and how you'll get there Mona Vert and her sister Donya have several years of experience in the jewelry industry, and currently operate Vert Jewelry in New York. Here are some jewelry business success tips from Mona: Hello entrepreneurs, I came across this great site while browsing the web for industry related needs. Surprise! What a fantastic resource for those who are interested in this business but need advice, direction, knowledge, or just to develop relationships. Business should be fun, just as we all want our lives to be. The one piece of advice, as a jewelry business owner and someone who has been in the fine jewelry business for my entire career, is to be totally honest with yourself about what your goal is. If you want to make jewelry because you find it fun to collect and learn about gemstones and jewelry making techniques that you can do at home, then develop a collection, make it into an excuse to have gal pals over for a party, and make some money while you're at it. Don't worry about becoming the next David Yurman if fun with some additional income is what you want. And if your goal IS to become the next David Yurman, then buckle down and do research about how he got to where he did. And don't waste time on eBay... make direct relationships with manufacturers in Los Angeles or New York where they will consign you the kind of jewelry you want to work with. Or buy some Chinese freshwater pearls online and some cute clasps, and sell them to friends or leave them on consignment in a local store. You'll be making a small income soon enough, and then build on that. Now that you have some capital, look for goldsmiths who can execute your designs if you have them, or start a small boutique in your town where you can take jewelry on consignment from those relationships you've built. Or just keep giving stores jewelry on consignment and soon enough you can demand they buy it, if it's selling for them. Whatever your goal is, just make sure it's defined and then make a business plan. It could be as simple as what I just suggested of many routes. So good luck!!! And come visit VertJewelry.com, where my sister and I in New York are having lots of fun, based on a solid business plan! Best to all, Mona Vert

Spring cleaning tips for your jewelry business Kathy from Laurel Lane Studios sent in this fantastic tip for clearing out the cobwebs (literally!): Are you feeling the rush of spring fever? Having spent much of the winter developing new jewelry lines and building inventory for upcoming spring and summer shows, I'’m ready to step out of my studio and begin selling. But before I do, it’'s time for some much-needed “workspace spring cleaning.” Okay, so you'’re not thrilled with the idea of spending an afternoon cleaning and organizing your workspace. But consider the benefits. You can:
Consider spring cleaning an integral part of your jewelry business. If you don't take time to organize and clean your workspace you risk lowering your productivity, losing clients due to misplaced contact information, and perhaps worst of all, diminishing the flow of creative juices. Now, get to work! You'’ll be glad you did.
Easy way to show your jewelry on the Web Here's a tip from Miss Peridot of Miss Peridot's Encyclopedia of Jewelry (I love her site name, by the way!): One of the better ways to showcase your creations on the Web for free is Flickr. Flickr also lets other jewelry enthusiasts, like myself, comment on the pieces and easily blog about them.
Jewelry home party display idea Here's a neat tip from jewelry artist Anne Masini: My mom gave me a tree she uses to hang Easter eggs on as a decoration. I took several trees, hole-punched my earring cards in the center of the top (with an extra-small hole punch so they are secure on the branch), and hung them on the tree. The earring tree is adorable and keeps them off the table, and the jewelry hangs and sparkles beautifully. I also hang rings on the trees. You can decorate them on the bottom with a ribbon, hang matching confetti, etc. They will have these trees in the stores now, because the Easter items are out already.
Turn your jewelry customers into repeat buyers I'm pleased to bring you the newest article by returning guest author Rachael Loving of Loving Jewelry: Customer Care
Making jewelry displays more efficient I'm working on making my jewelry displays and booth setup more compact and efficient. I've written previously about my lean, mean jewelry display system - but over time I've gradually let a few bulky or time-consuming elements slip back into my setup again. At my last show I realized I wanted to streamline things again. I had too many odds and ends to tote from my car to my booth space, and my setup and takedown took far more time and effort than I wanted to spend on them. And the way I've drifted into storing it all at home has started to become a nuisance. Time to get it all back into shape! :o) So currently I'm working out my new jewelry display and storage system that's even leaner, easier, and more efficient than my first one - and still sells lots of jewelry. I'll be writing about it soon!
Make your jewelry tools just right for the job Here's a tool tip from Roi Livni of E-Jewel of Livni Design: When one of your tools doesn't fit your task, why not customize it? You can polish, cut to fit, retrofit, mark, etc. to create just what you need for the job. This way you'll end up with many tools - but your process of manufacture will be much easier and faster.
Easy way to convert measurements to metric for your international customers Pamela of Love Beads Unlimited sent in this excellent tip: I am surprised at how many jewelry websites that want to appeal to an international audience forget to include metric measurements. While bead sizes are given in mm, the lengths of necklaces, bracelets and earrings are usually only provided in inches. This makes it harder for international buyers (i.e., the majority of internet users) to visualize item dimensions, and introduces potential errors in calculating correct sizes. The solution is very simple: Download the freeware program "Convert" from JoshMadison.Net. This nifty utility lets you turn inches into centimeters, pounds into kilograms, and much more.
