My Mother and I have always enjoyed making our own jewelry.

At the end of last year, after many talks of wanting to start our own jewelry business, we finally did!!

We live 3 hours apart and have learned how to really work as a team.

We first wanted to have our own store, but had many cons against that idea.

First, which city would be more successful for a shop, mine or my Mom's?

How could we afford the start up costs without quitting our full-time jobs?

How could we be sure that we wouldn't lose everything we've always dreamed of?

That's when we decided to just have an Internet jewelry business. The chances of success with an Internet business versus an actual store seem much higher because the risk of loss is much less.

We had to think of what all we would need for a web site, and from there we had to find a webhost that would offer everything we needed.

Once we found our host we built our site, which was extremely easy since the webhost site supplies you with a template and all you have to do is add your own words and pictures. You have rights to everything so you make all the changes you want at anytime you want and just keep re-publishing.

After we finished our site we had to find a way to get onto the major search engines. We found a free online class that teaches you how to build successful keywords / phrases, how to make your site look professional, and much more.

We even created a site map through Google.

We still aren't as high on the search engines as we would like to be, but we've only been doing this for a few months so we will eventually make our way to the top!

Now we are going to art/craft fairs and having home jewelry parties, as well as selling our jewelry on eBay and other well known sites.

One venture we are working on now is finding a small consignment boutique to feature our jewelry. I totally recommend this idea as you can offer the store a 70/30 split or whatever you feel is fair, plus you can offer to feature the boutique on your web site in return.

By taking your jewelry business to the web, you can have an online store of your own, without the many costs and risks of owning a physical store!

Daughter Donna Thornton and Mom Teri Calbert of Blue Hills Treasure Chest offer just a little bit of everything - from handmade beaded and polymer clay jewelry, handmade home decor, and handmade candles to purses and digital scrap booking services.
