I Buy Jewelry on Ebay If ...

by Anonymous
(Naples, Florida)

I've bought handcrafted jewelry on eBay, but it's kind of a chore to shop there - you have to scroll through a lot of junk and mass-produced stuff to find the truly handmade pieces.

Sellers don't always list their items in the categories they should.

When I find an eBay jewelry seller I like, though, I tend to come back and buy more.

I especially like it when they show lots of photos of the same piece, and in one of the photos show some way I can tell how big it is - such as in someone's hand or next to a measuring stick.

One thing that some eBay sellers do that really turns me off, is charging a huge shipping fee like $6 or $7, when I know it costs less than $2 to stick this tiny piece of jewelry in a bubble envelope and mail to me! I don't like hidden fees like this, because it makes me wonder how honest the seller is about other things.

But I guess I do feel a bit more comfortable buying handmade items via a major venue like eBay, because I have some recourse if the vendor isn't honest and selling high quality jewelry.

I sell alot of jewelry online. One thing the customer doesn't realize is that shipping is not cheap anymore. When I sell one piece of jewelry this is what goes into the shipping cost. 1 bubble mailer-.55. First class shipping- 1.95 delivery confirmation .75 Insurance on package contents worth $30.00- 1.70.

I used to have an Ebay store and now have my own website. The biggest worry a seller can have is that a piece will be lost. I only ship Priority Mail with insurance. I print the postage online and the packaging is free. It costs $6.90 to ship a package with $100 in insurance and free delivery confirmation.
I can buy a bubble envelope for $1.90 and ship with no insurance for $2.00 but what do I do if it never gets there? It's not worth taking the risk to save $3.

Shipping Fees

I make jewelry for myself and as gifts for family & friends, so I buy quite a few components (specialty beads, etc) online. I understand what goes into shipping costs. I prefer the seller adds a reasonable upcharge to the product ($5 - $15) to include shipping, and then not mention shipping to me. In other words, if they sell a lampglass bead for $75, add $15 shipping and just give me a total price of $90 and say it includes shipping.

I make jewelry pieces with large 2" handcrafted glass pendants. I prefer to ship in a box as opposed to a bubble mailer so I can protect the jewelry and ensure it arrives in one piece! I hate sellers who upcharge too, but as a seller, I want to make sure my item(s) get there safely. I do offer flat rate first class shipping for $5.00 if the buyer does not want Priority Mail.

I make and sell jewelries. Recently I decided to create my own website. And because I like to be honest with my customers I went to the local Post Office and asked them for the rates. They advised me what is the cheapest and safest way to send my jewelries with insurance. These are the prices for shipping I included in the website.
