How to Get in the Local Village Markets?

by Tim
(Platja D'aro Spain)

We are living in Costa Brava Spain and as designers we would love to get on the local markets with our stuff like jewellery and original creations.

Every day and evening we find nice marketplaces with creative people selling and making their stuff.

But it doesn't seem to be easy, in every village we go to they tell us that the markets are completely full.

We are now completely blocked and have a very low income.

Does anyone know how to get on a market here?

Any information would be helpful!

Thanks!

Tim & Cath

Local markets

Hi Tim and Cath,

I don't have any experience with village markets in Spain - so I'm hoping someone with related experience will leave a comment for you here.

However, what about setting up your own jewelry selling venue, if you can't get a space in the markets?

Are there businesses in these villages where you might be able to get the owner to let you do a trunk show there? (You can compensate him / her with jewelry or a percentage of your sales.)

Restaurants, hotels, and banks are often good spots for trunk shows - especially if you can set up during their busiest times of the week.

Have you considered hanging sign outside your house if you are on a main road. what about hosting a sunday drop in with a couple of other artisans in your area - that way you get passing trade perhaps and meet some of the locals.
what about approaching the schools / churches for advertising in the newsletters.

Hi,

I live in Portugal, your nearby country :) and i understand your problem, here is the same thing. I don't know which people do you talk, but did you try to talk to the person that it's responsable for the events and culture in the local City Hall? Manny times they are the ones that give the space or organize the event...

You can also try to search in the web (Flickr or other websites) for spanish groups that talk about crafts, cause sometimes they know who are the person who is organizing the local market or know in advance when will the next event take place, so you have time to introduce yourself and your designs.

One think that i tried and worked well was to send a e-mail to the City Hall introducing myself and asking to be part of the future events and shows.

For last, you can also contact the local tourism and craft related associations for informations about the events that they will organize and ask how can you also be included...

I hope i could help you...

Strung Up Jewelry makes beautiful pieces from recycled guitar strings. We were selling pieces to individuals and then hooked up with a local day spa. The clientel was a match and we encouraged people to go in and the spa would give a tour of the facility. This is a win win for everyone. We also utilize etsy. Strung Up Jewelry is now available for wholesale opportunities. There are stores who will entertain this and consignment.
