How Do You Know You're Ready to Sell Your Jewelry Online?

I've wanted to set up a website for a long time to sell my jewelry. I'm not looking for a web empire, really, but I'd like to be able to pay for my supplies.

So I have two questions:

1. When do you know you are good enough to sell your jewelry?

2. If my designs are mostly in silver nickel should I invest in sterling silver wire/findings now or when my business takes off?

Thanks for your help. I think I might wait and build up my supplies/ skills over time, but I'd like to hear from you guys first.

Starting to sell jewelry online

Here are some thoughts for you:

First, it will take you a little while to decide where you want to sell your jewelry online (your own site, or a blog, or a storefront like Artfire / Etsy, etc.), and then get your site or storefront set up.

You may also need to spend some time developing your skills of shooting and editing your jewelry photos to post online.

Then it will take a bit more time for you to do your own promoting, linking, networking, etc. to get interested customers to your online jewelry business. It takes awhile to get that momentum built up.

During all that time, you can also be working on improving your jewelry skills, as you mentioned.

Then your jewelry and your online business should be ready at about the same time.

So you may want to start now, researching and deciding where and how you want your jewelry business to be set up online.

By the time you have it all figured out and set up, you can add some of your ever-improving jewelry items to your shop.

Then you can work on building traffic to your online jewelry business, while also continuing to develop your jewelry making skills and designs.

Regarding stocking up on jewelry supplies -

You may want to wait until you see what your customers are most interested in buying, so you don't wind up with a stockpile of supplies you may not use.

Over the years I've created a few jewelry items that I thought would be sure sellers - but they didn't sell at all.

I've also created a few things that unexpectedly sold like hotcakes, as fast as I could keep up with making them.

An easy way to get a feel for a website

Hello, I had a similar situation and am easing my way into a website. I also questioned if i should sell online so i set up a free website to get a feel for the whole thing. At weebly.com you can set up your own website for free. It is very easy after playing with it. Later, if all goes well, i will begin to sell on my site. This is only an option for you to think about. Good advice Rena. But just how does one go about building traffic to our web site or page? And what type of things sold like hotcakes?
