Help Customers Understand the Skill Involved in My Jewelry

by James T.
(Toronto)

Many people don't understand the level of skill involved in making my jewelry. As a consequence, it's hard for me to get the prices my jewelry is actually worth.

How can I help customers understand the skill level and intricate work involved in creating my jewelry?

Answer:

Demonstrate Your Jewelry Making Process

It sounds like a visual demonstration is just what you need to educate your customers on the value of your creations.

You can do this in a couple of different ways:

* Actually make jewelry right there in front of people. (Not always possible, depending on the venue, your tools and materials, and whether you have an assistant to handle customers while you create.)

* Create a photo series showing one piece, going from the raw materials stage, through each major step in its creation, to shining finished piece of jewelry. Print this photo series on either a giveaway brochure / flyer, or a poster for your booth.

* Create a photo series as above, but show it as a digital slideshow on either a digital photo frame or laptop computer.

People's impression of the value of your jewelry will take a tremendous leap when they can actually visualize the wizardry involved in going from raw materials to gorgeous finished jewelry.

Give a Talk at Your Booth About Your Jewelry

I found it also helps to have a sort of oral presentation about my jewelry making process, where I tell people the most interesting and rigorous parts of my creative process.

I do agree, though, that having a visual presentation of some sort, like the photos mentioned or a video, really is worth 1,000 words in getting people to understand how your jewelry is made and why it's costly.
