Make Hangtags for
the Perfect Jewelry Package

Jewelry packaging is important.

I looked at purchasing generic supplies, but this can be a substantial expense for a fledgling business - and where would I store a large quantity of packaging materials anyway?

Slightly disheartened, I continued searching for ideas.

Then, several versions of handmade / homemade marketing materials caught my attention.

Voila! I could create memorable hangtags with thick paper, ink, rubber stamps, and a theme.

My jewelry designs are inspired by vintage fashion, so I wanted a theme that reflected that mood. Window shopping at three large craft/hobby stores gave me many images to consider. I settled on stamps that reflect nostalgic femininity. The ink color was a natural choice; black and white is the perfect color combination for my vintage mood.

A simple silhouette using the words of a popular song, serves as the body for a 1950's cocktail dress; perfect to showcase my necklaces!

Also, two sketches of ball gowns; one just an outline, the other with saturated color. My "dress" collection was complete.

To feature earrings: a face framed by a rectangle. I also bought two decorative stamps for bags and jewelry description notes. I thought a ribbon cutter and mini diamond-shape die cutter would allow me to secure the jewelry.

I bought white paper lunch bags at the grocery store; they have nostalgic appeal and are very inexpensive. My vision of vintage glamour was coming together.

Tag paper needs to be stiff enough not to crumble under the weight of stones and glass. I wanted cardstock, but didn't like any of the colors. I ended up picking flecked paper with a slightly lighter weight than cardstock.

To add my contact information on the tags, I ordered a self-inking business stamp from the local office supply. Now, it was time to experiment with layout.

Using a paper cutter, I came up with two sizes for necklaces, one for bracelets and one for earrings.

I discovered that the earring holes could fit along the frame, near true positioning. Unfortunately, the frame around the face meant I needed to stamp straight. Once I established a marker, imperfections were reduced.

Thankfully, my dress stamps were floating images and didn't require alignment. I centered the images, used my business stamp below the image, and punched out the attachment holes above the image. I slip each toggle clasp side through a ribbon hole, and secure long necklaces with a stick pin, by "cinching" the waist of the dress. I can attach a description of my materials using thin satin ribbon and a small card.

I punch out the diamond shape, use a flowery swirl stamp on one side, and write the description on the other side, then tie to the piece.

White lunch bags are stamped with my business information, and an art deco square. The jewelry tags slip right into the folded or open lunch bag, for a unique and distinctive presentation.

This packaging is versatile enough for use at craft fairs, house parties, or mailing.
