Going to My First Jewelry Workshop!! What Should I Bring?

Thanks to an organization called Operation Once in a Lifetime (they facilitate amazing opportunities for wounded servicemembers and their families) I will be flying to Dana Point, California on November 2 for the Wire Masters Workshop and I don't know what I should bring!

I will be flying from San Antonio, Texas for this event, so whatever I bring needs to be able to travel in my suitcase. (I'm not planning on bringing my buffer).

The only jewelry making class I have ever taken was a soldering class and it was local, about 2 years ago, so I am concerned I will forget something.

I know some of Rena's readers are workshop regulars... advice?

Traveling to a workshop with jewelry tools

Awesome, Tara! I know you'll have a wonderful time. Can't wait to see what you make there!

Two things I would suggest for you:

1) Did the Wire Masters Workshop info mention what supplies they provide for workshop participants to use? Or their recommendations for what you should consider bringing? If so, that might help you decide what you do and don't need to bring - unless you prefer to use your own tools.

2) Have a look at this list from the U.S. Homeland Security Department's Transportation Security Administration: Prohibited and Permitted Items. Down in the "Tools" section of that list, it says these items ARE permitted to travel in either your carry-on or your checked baggage:

Tools (seven inches or less in length)

Wrenches and Pliers (seven inches or less in length)

NOTE: Any sharp objects in checked baggage should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and Security Officers.

So measure your tools to be sure they're under 7" long, and have some way to sheath or securely wrap any cutters or other sharp tools.

You may want to contact your airline to make sure they don't have any additional rules or instructions for traveling with these items.
