How well is your jewelry hidden at home? Do you have hiding places?
Unfortunately, the most obvious place for a thief to find your jewelry in your home is your bedroom - namely in your jewelry box located on top of your dresser.
So instead, try to hide your jewelry throughout your home in various unlikely locations.
(However, if you do hide your jewelry in various locations around the house, be sure to keep a list of where each piece of jewelry is hidden, and inside what.)
There are unique props (also known as "diversion safes" or "gimmick gadgets") that are made to resemble actual famous brand name products. These containers are replicas of actual cans of food and drinks, household cleansers, etc., which you could keep in their obvious locations - with your jewelry hidden in them.
So a "pop can" safe can be kept in the fridge with your other pop drinks, or a "cleanser product" safe could be stored under your sink with other cleansers. These locations are much less conspicuous to a jewelry thief.
Other clever prop safes include fruit and vegetable look-alikes, hollow books, stacks of C.D.'s, rocks, and planters. One of my favorites is the replica of an electrical outlet that can be screwed into the wall in any room (sometimes called a "wall outlet diversion safe").
These replicas are not expensive, and when displayed in the appropriate spots where they look natural they don't arouse suspicion from a potential thief.
Other "home-remedy" solutions for concealing jewelry would be to place your jewelry in Ziploc bags and hide them under sheets, towels, decorative zippered pillows, or rolled into your socks.
You can also store your jewels in the bottom of a bin that holds seasonal clothes, Christmas decorations, or craft supplies.
Tennis anyone? By cutting a slit into a tennis ball and squeezing it open, you can conceal small items inside it.
Your children's stuffed animals are another less conspicuous place to hide jewelry - simply open a seam, slide your jewelry inside and re-stitch or close with Velcro.
The advantage of concealing your valuable pieces of jewelry individually in various props is that even in the worst case scenario, if thieves are clever enough to figure out a decoy's spot, time is not in their favor.
They would be unlikely to be able to make off with more than one piece of your jewelry - as compared to how easily they could grab your entire lifetime collection stored in a dresser-top jewelry box.
