Ethnic Artsy Bangle Bracelet

Ethnic Artsy Bangle Bracelet

I was one of those people who would read the "What's Stopping Your Jewelry Business" articles here and sigh.

I always seemed to find excuses, and could hear the voices in my head saying things like, "Your pieces aren't good enough to sell" or "You don't know how to run a business" or "What if someone asks you to make something you don't know how to make?".

You see, I have lots of friends who LOVE jewelry and have some pretty fantastic pieces of their own, and I worried what they would think, too.

Although I was anxious to make my jewelry and start my business, I always seemed to find a way to talk myself out of it.

The turning point for me was when I read an article in a book from Oprah Winfrey, which summarized it like this:

"If you've been considering starting something new, but you keep coming up with excuses as to why you shouldn't, ask yourself this question: 'What's the absolute worst thing that could happen if you went ahead with your plans?' Then write down your answers, and chances are you'll see in front of you that it really wouldn't be that bad after all."

I took this advice in January 2009, and although it has been a year of intense learning for me, I'm happy to say that I now have a website and an Etsy store.

I tried to start by making a piece of jewelry each and every day, and I found that my concerns would disappear as I sat down at my jewelry table and started to design a pair of earrings or a necklace or bracelet.

I searched for classes to take to learn new things, and really started to gain confidence in my work.

I decided that if I really wanted my own Jewelry Business, I would have to face my fears and confront them one at a time.

Remember how I said I was concerned about what my friends would think?

Well, one of the best things has been the reactions I've heard from them. They're very supportive, and they're proud of me for taking the chance!

Try this yourself and make a list of the worst things that could happen if you started your own jewelry business, and I'm confident that you will come to the same conclusion I did.

Just take things one step at a time, and you will see that it's not as intimidating!

I'm so thankful to have come so far this year, and I love what I do.

Although I'm still just getting started in my business, but I'm thrilled that I've had many small successes along the way, and I love telling people I meet that I am a Jewelry Artist!

Beyond Beautiful
by: Rena

Hi Polly,

Your jewelry truly is gorgeous.

Your friends must be wondering, "Where has this girl been hiding her fabulous talent all these years???" :o)

I'm so glad to hear that you took the plunge and things are coming together for you - kudos to you for really doing it.

I think your story will resonate with so many other people.

So many of us hover on the edge of living our dream - the first step often feels like the biggest one, even when it only needs to be a very small one.

Thank you for sharing how you overcame your hesitation and are now doing it!

I have seen a lot of stylized jewelry over the years and yours is fresh, open and artistic! Not an easy thing to do, but you are doing it!

I am so impressed by what you have achieved in only one year! Congratulations, your jewellery is drop-dead gorgeaus and your business image very professional!

Oh. My. Goodness. Checking your website was a pleasant shock! I too am an Interior Design graduate, started my business officially at the start of '09, and took all my photos out on the woodpile, a marble tile, etc. Were we separated at birth? ;) Also, your article pretty much sums up all the events and worries that I had experienced when I was trying to decide if I could do this [sell jewelry]. I love your jewelry and I hope it takes you far! Yay, you!

NOTHING TO IT BUT TO DO IT
by: Elizabeth

Your story is inspiring. Although I don't make my
own jewelry, I am starting a jewelry business.
For a year now I have been buying jewelry wholesale and storing it away until I can finally get up enough nerve to actually go out and start selling. I had the same fears you did.
Finally this week I made the move, twice. I went
into two shops and presented my jewelry. Although
both shops loved the jewelry (reproductions of
celebrity jewelry), it was only right for one shop, and I was invited to come back. It's a start, and I am so happy I finally made the move.

Wonderful story

Wonderful story Polly, I can definitely identify myself with your story. I have had cold feet for quite while, thinking what if they don't like my jewellery can I compete with the big designers? But I am beginning to believe in myself so I am taking the plunge this year, that was my new year resolution after being out off work for over 18 months. I am so glad to have read your story it has really inspired me more. Your jewellery is wonderful and beautifully presented. Keep up the good work and may God bless you in everything you do.

So glad you took the leap. And your jewelry is lovely. I resisted getting an online presence for so long but am also now on etsy at http://starseedjewelry.etsy.com. I highly recommend it.
