Accepting Credit Cards at Shows and Parties

One of the questions I have always had was what forms of payment would I accept when I was at a show or doing a party?

The obvious answers were cash and checks.

If you don't know by now, you are losing sales if you do not accept credit cards. On my website I accept credit cards, PayPal and Google Checkout - maximizing the payment choices.

But what if I am at a fair, expo, show or jewelry party?

Well I could use the old knuckle-buster and make an impression of the card and do manual batches when I got home.

But there's a risk, a big risk; you don't know if the card is any good until AFTER you do the batch and by then your merchandise is on it's way down the highway with its new owner. Scratch that idea.

I use Quickbooks and their merchant service has an option when I sign up to accept credit cards (as well as checks) with my laptop. However, because I am not swiping the card, I get mid-qualified rates (not the best for my buck).

And the other part of this problem is what if the host or people putting on the show/party do not have Internet or WiFi access? Back to doing the batch without a pre-auth after I get home. Bleccch.

Recently I had purchased a Motorola Droid touch pad cell phone.

I noted that Intuit (the Quickbooks Merchant Services people) have a downloadable app that lets you take credit cards via your cell phone!!!

Great as long as you can get cell phone service wherever you are, which is most places nowadays. You can log in to the app and enter the info and the pre-auth is performed and you can send a receipt via email or text msg to the card holder. Sweet!

It gets better!

Intuit also sells 2 devices from MagTek, both Bluetooth capable.

The first is a card swipe which will allow you to get the best/lowest fees and the other is a card swipe/printer combo that prints the signature ticket on the spot for the customer to sign.

Yes I pay $15 more per month for the service, and no minimum, but it sure is worth it.

Plus it all ties into my Quickbooks accounting AND I get email receipts of each charge as well.

Now we have choices.

Cool tip - thank you!

Doug, thanks so much for sharing your research here!

I agree - with smart-phone technology and apps for nearly anything under the sun, it's a cool way to set up your payment system for jewelry shows and parties.

Neat to hear how it's integrating into the rest of your system so well!

On another note, I also wanted to compliment you on your professional "JD Kelly Jewelry" banner up on the wall in your photo. It looks great, and is visible from a long way off. A great touch for your jewelry booth! :o)

Thank you Rena for the kind comments.

I guess I can plug my source, www.VistaPrints.com - I have found them to have the best prices and most reliable service. I have been using them for more than 5 years.

The most important thing is that I had a clear and consistent message. I have my business cards, magnetic signs, post-it notes, hats, t-shirts and everything with the same logo.

I do however, have rack card for the jewelry parties with a different look.

another CC option
by: Caly's Jewelry Creations

I discovered the same thing last August...after I was "taken" with the knuckle buster method, luckily not for much.

I purchased a Sprint Palm Pre phone. I can log into Pro Pay (my CC site) from my phone and run the transaction for an immediate authorization.
I haven't run into a problem anywhere I've had a show with internet access.

I also checked into the security of the wifi on my phone. I wanted to make sure that my customers transactions were secure. I found that my phone transactions were actually more secure than inputting them on my pc. That was important to me...!

new service
by: Linda Coppolino

I just read about a new company where you can swipe credit cards using your cell phone. The best part is that there are no monthly fees and no equipment fees. Haven't tried it, but it's been getting good reviews. www.squareup.com

If anyone uses it or heard about it, let us know if it's any good.

Thanks.

Any more feedback?

I checked out that website on square.com, and it says it is only for the iPhone or Droid. Does anyone know of something similar where you can use a regular Motorola cell phone?

Thanks for the info!

the Square

Here's a link to the features and cost page.

I f you do a good volume of charges, the lower rates, like I get from Intuit will outweigh the monthly fee over their higher rates. I pay 1.65 for qualified and 2.45 for mid.

The good thing about them is that you don't need a merchant account so if your credit is not so good, then you can get an account and you only pay when you charge. It is definitely a good alternative.

To answer the question about other phones, I suppose they are only support phones that can download applications and those apps function on the new technology because of the security issues. You'll have to upgrade i guess.

Internet Connection at Shows

Another idea is getting a USB Air Card (most cell phone providers have them). Hook it up to your laptop or Netbook and you can get credit card service access via the Internet. With this option, you can purchase a USB card swiper. I'm going to use Quickbooks - Intuit. www.quickbooksms.com/qbmsportal for more information.

Paypal - Virtual Terminal
by: Tracy Carothers

Not sure if anyone realizes this but Paypal also offers a service to business accounts called Virtual Terminal. The service is $30 per month and the Paypal fees of course but it is WELL WORTH it to have the ability to process cards.

I use my iPhone and either tether to my laptop or us a free app for iPhone to process. Best of all I need only sign up for the service when I am doing shows. Nobody carries cash anymore! :-)
