Your Profitable Jewelry Business:
Why Your Jewelry Business Needs a Permanent Web Address
by Rena Klingenberg
No matter how you sell your jewelry, it's important for your jewelry business to have a permanent, unchanging "home" on the Internet.
It can be either a blog or your own website.
Use this permanent URL ("www" address) on your jewelry business cards, your jewelry packaging, and all of your other marketing efforts.
It's also the URL you'll use for all the links you build, all around the Internet, that point to your jewelry business - links which grow in value and in traffic as time passes.
That way, no matter how you decide to sell your jewelry (or change the focus of your jewelry business) over time, your growing "following" of customers and friends will always be able to find you.
Avoid Being "Trapped" Somewhere You Don't Want to Be
Jewelry artists sometimes tell me that they'd like to leave an online storefront they're using (such as an eBay store or Etsy shop) - but unfortunately they've printed their Etsy storefront's URL on their jewelry business cards, jewelry packaging, etc., which have been distributed to hundreds of customers.
They've also worked to build a lot of Web links to that online storefront.
So if they drop that storefront now, none of those customers will be able to find this jewelry artist online - and the artist loses the benefits of all of that expensive printing, all the incoming links they've built, and all of their other marketing efforts.
They feel trapped into staying with a venue they'd like to leave.
The Freedom to Change and Evolve Your Business
But if you have one unchanging URL, you have the freedom to experiment and evolve into and out of all sorts of ways of selling your work - while still sending customers to your same main link forever.
Your permanent jewelry business home on the Internet could be as simple as a one-page website that has an enticing photo of your jewelry, plus a link ("enter my online jewelry boutique") that leads to whatever online storefront you're using.
That way, you could easily switch to a different storefront whenever you like - without losing the traffic you've already built to your online presence.
You'd simply change the "enter my online jewelry boutique" link so it leads to your new storefront, and your customers will always continue find you immediately via your main permanent blog or website.
Or if you're selling through multiple online storefronts, you could link to all of them.
But you wouldn't be tied to any storefront or other venue that's not working well for you - and you wouldn't be at risk of losing all of your traffic if the storefront you're using decides to suddenly go out of business.
(Of course, instead of the one-page website, you could start a blog that would be your permanent web address. Your blog posts could showcase your new pieces, and you could have links in the blog's sidebar leading to your current online storefront - which you could easily change if you move to a different venue.)
Even If You're Not Selling Your Jewelry Online...
People expect all businesses to have some sort of website.
So even if you don't intend to sell your work on the Web, you should still have at least an online "brochure" - a webpage that contains info like:
- your jewelry business name
- your logo
- your name
- your contact info (email address or an online "contact" form)
- other ways people can get in touch with you or see your work (Twitter, FaceBook, Flickr, etc.)
- attractive photos of your jewelry
- your artist bio / statement
- any relevant info about your jewelry
- links to your "press" - all interviews, articles, awards, etc., both online and offline, about you or your jewelry
- links to where and how people can see or purchase your jewelry - for example:
- a list of your upcoming shows (including dates and street addresses)
- a list of the shops that carry your work (including their street addresses and links to their websites)
- info on your home jewelry parties and how customers can schedule one
- info for shops or wholesale accounts that are interested in carrying your work.
Be sure to update your online brochure at least every six months to keep it current and relevant:
- post some new photos of your jewelry
- update your list of shows
- update your list of shops
- update your "about me" page
- add any new items to your "press" page.
Grow Your Jewelry Business by Staying in One Place
Don't lose the momentum and growth you build over time from incoming links, marketing materials you distribute, and all the other hard work you do to promote your jewelry business.
Even business cards you've handed out several years ago (or earring cards someone received with a long-ago purchase of your jewelry) can bring you repeat business - but ONLY IF you can still be found at the URL printed on those materials!
So if your jewelry business doesn't have a permanent spot online yet - don't wait!
Start a blog or a simple one-page website.
Make it the "headquarters" for your jewelry business on the Web, linking from it to any sales venues or information your customers need.
And use it as the permanent URL of your jewelry business - on all of your business cards, jewelry tags, packaging, marketing efforts, linking, etc., from here on out!
Now no matter where you live or how your business evolves - your customers, friends, and colleagues will be able to find you, keep up with you, and do business with you!

What I particularly like about Ruth Jones' Allover Art pendants is the neat way she combines two of her artistic talents.
Ruth is a skilled painter as well as a jewelry artist, and her hand-painted pendants with portraits of people or pets, landscapes, and other things are a wonderful way for her paintings to be seen and enjoyed by a wider audience!
