Your Profitable Jewelry Business:
Sell More Jewelry by Letting Customers Know It's Made to Last
by Rena Klingenberg
A few months ago when I surveyed real jewelry customers about what makes them buy (or not buy) handcrafted jewelry, several of them mentioned that they've bought handmade jewelry that quickly broke or fell apart.
The fear of buying another piece of poorly made jewelry makes many customers wary of purchasing anything from a jewelry artist.
That's why many potential customers approach our work with this mindset:
"The last time I bought a piece of handmade jewelry, it fell apart the next day. If I have a problem with this necklace later, will I be stuck with it?"
So a good selling point for your jewelry is that it's made to last.
Make sure you create your pieces with durability in mind - and then let customers know about your built-in quality features.
These features may seem like a no-brainer to us, but to customers it's hugely reassuring when you take the time to show-and-tell them about features like:
- wrapped loops
- soldered jump rings
- split rings
- double crimp beads
- stones set tightly
- clasps that hold securely
- stringing material that can't be cut by sharp bead edges
- any other quality features you design into your jewelry.
Communicate your commitment to high-quality handmade jewelry at every point where you have customer contact. For example:
- in person at jewelry shows and parties
- on your jewelry tags, earring cards, or other packaging
- on your website or blog
- in your artist statement
- on your business card
- in any other marketing literature you create
- in your individual jewelry listings wherever you sell your work online.
Two other things that are important to cover in your quality promotion:
- A satisfaction guarantee, along with a way for customers to contact you after the sale.
- Care instructions accompanying each piece of jewelry you sell. The customer's proper care of a piece of jewelry is an important factor in making it last!
