Your Profitable Jewelry Business

Consultants Who Sell
Your Jewelry at Home Parties

by Rena Klingenberg

Over the years, various people have asked me if they could sign up as a "consultant" to sell my handcrafted jewelry at home parties.

These folks are interested in becoming independent sales representatives of my jewelry, earning some extra income with flexible hours, the way they could with an established party-plan company like Pampered Chef.

The difference is that the people who have approached me are seeking unique products to sell, so they won't be competing against other consultants selling the same products in the same town. They don't want to represent a big party-plan company's products.

I think this type of arrangement has the potential to be a great way to sell your handcrafted jewelry - as well as a great opportunity for your consultant / independent rep.

Here's how this arrangement would work:

When someone signs up to be a consultant representing your line, they would purchase jewelry directly from you at a discount, and then resell it at full retail price via home jewelry parties.

If you're interested in the possibility of consultants / independent reps selling your jewelry at home parties, here's what I recommend:

  1. Start slowly, with just one consultant, and grow gradually. That way you can work out any kinks in your system of selling jewelry this way on a small scale, and get an idea of how many consultants you're able and willing to produce jewelry for.
  2. Work out a program for your consultants that's very similar to what all the big party-plan companies (also called "direct selling" companies) have developed.

These established companies have spent years ironing out all the details of this type of arrangement, so the first thing I would do is to study every page of the websites of several of these companies and see how they do it.

For example, I would check out the websites of jewelry party-plan companies such as Silpada, Lia Sophia, Fifth Avenue, Luxe, Bead Retreat, Angela Moore, etc.

Of course, don't copy these companies exactly, but use your research to jumpstart the way you set up your own program.

  3. Familiarize yourself with the Direct Selling Association's Code of Ethics regarding this method of selling products and recruiting reps. These are some solid guidelines that should go a long way toward preventing problems.
  4. Point your consultants to some training on how to do successful jewelry parties:

My collection of Jewelry Home Party articles

    Lorri Ely's jewelry party guide.

  5. Keep in close contact with your consultants. What ideas do they have for improving your product line, packaging, your agreement with them, etc? Anytime you have sales reps, it's vital to welcome their input and keep it a win-win situation.
  6. Have an attorney look over any contracts or agreements you plan to use, before you have your consultants sign them. This small step can save you massive headaches later.
  7. Also consider other ways your consultants might sell your jewelry for you - such as trunk shows, their own website / blog, a personal shopping service, etc.

I've mentioned how my friend Angie often takes a selection of my jewelry to her workplace and sells a ton of it - and I reward her with custom jewelry. This is certainly a way your consultants could successfully sell your jewelry.

  8. You may want to have your agreement state that your consultants are not permitted to remove your jewelry tags / earring cards and pretend that they made the jewelry.

If you decide to enlist a consultant sales force to sell your work at jewelry parties, please keep me posted! :o)
