Your Profitable Jewelry Business
Profiting from the "Design it Yourself" Trend
by Rena Klingenberg
An interesting trend in the clothing and accessories marketplace is that of enabling customers to "design their own" products.
People LOVE having the opportunity to "create" or personalize their own items from a set of choices, and it can be a huge selling point.
You could easily adapt this idea to your jewelry business, regardless of where you sell your work.
As an example, here's one way you might offer your customers a simple "design it yourself" necklace:
- Choose a pendant from a selection of styles and colors.
- Choose a cord from a selection of colors or materials (such as leather, ribbon, satin, rubber, etc.).
- Choose a clasp from a selection of styles and metals.
- Choose the necklace length.
Of course, you'll have to make the "design it yourself" items individually, after they're ordered - so be sure to tell customers that because their jewelry will be custom made to their specifications, it will take (X) number of days until it's shipped or delivered to them.
However, if you offer "design it yourself" jewelry at shows or parties, you could make simple pieces as people wait - but only if you have at least one helper who can manage your booth or party while you make the jewelry. More complex jewelry designs would need to be delivered or shipped after the event.
Here are three non-jewelry fashion sites that offer "design it yourself" products. It's well worth visiting them to see how they work this concept online with their own products:
Also, jewelry artist Lorri Ely explains how to do home jewelry parties with the "design it yourself" concept in A While-You-Wait Jewelry Making Party.
HOT TIP for "Design it Yourself" Success: Don't offer too many choices for any of your style options.
The more things there are to choose from, the longer it takes people to decide on which they like best. And the longer it takes to decide, the more likely they are to decide not to buy the item after all! So consider limiting each option to a maximum of about 6 choices.
Have fun helping your customers design their own jewelry!
Neat Jewelry-Related Website
Our interesting site today is Ex-Boyfriend Jewelry - whose motto is "You don't want it, he can't have it back."
The site is a place where people can buy, sell, trade, or otherwise unload their "ex" jewelry (pieces given to them by ex-boyfriends, ex-husbands, ex-girlfriends, ex-wives, etc.). As of this writing, there are over 2800 ads in the Ex-Boyfriend Jewelry marketplace. There's also a community section of the site, where people can share and support each other regarding their breakups.
Ex-Boyfriend Jewelry has obviously hit a significant market niche - although the site is less than 6 months old, it gets as many as a quarter of a million page views per day!
