Your Profitable Jewelry Business
A Trick for Jewelry Packaging that Brings More Customers to Your Website
by Rena Klingenberg
Most jewelry artists who have a website or blog include their site link on all of their jewelry packaging (including business cards, earring cards, tags, boxes, shopping bags, etc.).
For example:
Handcrafted by XYZ Jewelry www.xyzjewelry.com
But if you really want to put your jewelry packaging to work for you, take it a step further.
Instead of just listing your web address, try including an irresistible enticement for people to go to your jewelry website or blog.
Here are some ideas for enticements that people can't resist:
- Video, slideshow, or photos - People absolutely love to watch videos and slideshows, or to view images that give them a look "behind the scenes".
And the more "behind the scenes" they experience, the more they trust you and feel a connection to your jewelry business.
Your potential customers would be fascinated by watching you make a piece of jewelry, create a lampwork bead, work your magic with pmc or polymer clay - or whatever it is that you specialize in.
So after you set up a video, slideshow, or images of your "behind the scenes" activity on your jewelry website / blog, your jewelry packaging could include an enticement like one of these:
- "Watch me create one of my pendants in my workshop - go to www.xyzjewelry.com"
- "See my jewelry cleaning video to learn how to keep your jewels sparkling - at www.xyzjewelry.com"
- "Get a sneak peek behind the scenes at my last jewelry show - at www.xyz.com"
- "Watch one of my smudging ceremonies - go to www.xyzjewelry.com"
Videos and images like these also help build your status as a "jewelry expert" in your customers' minds.
- A drawing for a prize - Who doesn't love a chance at winning a desirable item for free? Invite people to try their hand at winning your monthly drawing for a piece of jewelry, a nice crystal, or some useful gear with your logo on it.
The enticement on your jewelry packaging could say something like:
- "Enter this month's drawing for free jewelry - go to www.xyzjewelry.com"
- "Win a cool XYZ Jewelry t-shirt - enter at www.xyzjewelry.com"
(At CafePress you can set up all sorts of gear to be imprinted with your jewelry business logo or jewelry images whenever a customer places an order. So for your online contest, you can choose the type of imprinted item to offer for a prize, and then get the contest winner's size, color, etc. preferences - then place the order via CafePress yourself and have the item shipped directly to the winner.)
- A self-assessment or "personality" quiz - For some reason, we humans love to take quizzes that supposedly tell us something about ourselves. :o)
You can make up a fun jewelry-related true/false quiz for your visitors, awarding 1 point for every "True" answer, and 0 points for every "False" answer. Come up with a fun variety of results for each range of total points.
Examples of what you can add to your jewelry packaging to entice customers to your online quiz:
- "What's your jewelry personality? Take the quiz at www.xyzjewelry.com and find out!"
- "Test your jewelry trivia expertise! Match wits with the quiz at www.xyzjewelry.com"
- An online "jewelry outlet store" - Your "outlet store" would be the page of your site where you sell your old stock of jewelry at a discount to make room for your new pieces.
Everyone loves to get a bargain - and by enticing people to see your clearance items, you'll also get many of them clicking over to the rest of your website.
For example:
- "Get unbelievable bargains at my online jewelry outlet store, before they're gone - hurry over to www.xyzjewelry.com"
Got some great new ideas now for adding an irresistible enticement that will bring customers to your website?
I'd love to hear how you put this idea to work - and how it works out for you!
Neat Jewelry-Related Website
Our neat site today is The Dog Jewelry Museum - an outstanding example of a niche jewelry website that's interesting, high quality, and focuses on a very specific jewelry topic.
For 35 years "curator" Deb Schneider collected dog-motif jewelry. Then she began photographing her remarkable collection, and created this online museum to share with other dog jewelry fanciers.
Deb says, "All the jewelry in the collection is costume, from approximately 11 decades (1900-present). Pieces were purchases, gifts, and donations and have been researched and described."
In addition to the slideshow on her website's home page, Deb also has each piece of jewelry individually cataloged and detailed in her museum.
