Your Profitable Jewelry Business
When a Jewelry Artist's Computer Crashes
by Rena Klingenberg
A few of my readers have mentioned to me recently that their computer has either crashed or been stolen, causing them to lose everything they had on it.
Unfortunately they didn't have any of their data backed up anywhere - so all of their files and photos are gone forever.
A data loss like this can be a huge setback for your jewelry business (and your personal life) - and it can take a long time to rebuild from it.
What if you had to re-photograph every piece of jewelry in your inventory - and then edit all those photos?
What if you lost all of the photos you can't retake - the ones of your children and other loved ones?
What if every time you went to pull up one of your files you realized, oh yeah, it's gone forever?
What if you lost all your files right before a major jewelry show - and you had to totally re-create the design of your jewelry hangtags and earring cards just to print up a few more of them?
Data loss is a nightmare I don't want experience! But fortunately it's very easy to prevent.
I recommend this four-part approach to securing your computer and your data:
1) Use Internet Protection Software
If you ever connect your computer to the Internet, you need to have protection. You need a personal firewall, antivirus protection, and antispyware.
These features are often combined into a single program. Top-rated protection programs usually include McAfee, Norton, and Kaspersky. These are available online and in most stores where computers are sold.
2) Back Up Your Files to Removable Data Storage
It's so easy to backup once a day (or at least once a week) by copying your main folders to a data-stick, removable hard drive - or even an iPod.
These removable storage items are available at electronics stores and online.
3) Back Up Your Files to a Second Location Outside of Your Home
It's a good idea to have an additional backup of your data in a different location - just in case. One of the best solutions is to use an encrypted online service that continually backs up all of your files as you work (including photos, video, and music files).
This is so easy to do because once you set it up, you never have to do anything again to have all of your files backed up continually.
For this I use Carbonite - http://www.carbonite.com - and I've had one occasion so far when I was very glad I did!
When I installed iTunes on my computer, it wiped out my existing music library of over 1,000 songs. I nearly cried until I realized my music library was safely backed up on Carbonite. I was able to restore the entire library with no problem.
4) Guard Against Computer Theft
Sadly, statistics show that a laptop computer is stolen every 53 seconds in the U.S.
Two things you can do to reduce your risk of losing your laptop to theft:
- Invest in a computer lock with attached cable. It may not prevent all thefts, but it will slow a thief down - which often is enough to make them move on to an easier mark. Consider using your cable lock anywhere you have your computer away from home. This is especially important at art shows, where you can be easily distracted. And if you leave your booth for a break during a show, don't leave your laptop, regardless of how you may have it locked up. You can easily put it in a backpack and take it with you.
- Subscribe to a laptop theft recovery service like LoJack for Laptops - www.lojackforlaptops.com .
If your computer is stolen, you'll have a much greater chance of getting it back again.
Don't wait to make your computer a safer place for your jewelry business (and personal) data! If your computer crashed tomorrow, you'd be VERY glad you took care of these things today.
Note: If you're able to deduct your jewelry business expenses from your taxes, you also may be able to deduct the cost of these computer protection measures. Please ask your accountant first.
