Update!
Start Selling More Jewelry Online

This week I'll be sending the current draft of my upcoming book, "Sell More Jewelry Online with Social Marketing" to my reviewers, for their kind input.

The final version of the book will be available to you at the end of this month.

In this book I take you step by step through exciting (and very effective) strategies for using social websites to build up a stream of interested online jewelry customers.

If you follow the tips in this book, you won't have to pay for any advertising, or rely on Google or any other search engine to send jewelry customers to you. You'll have much more control over your volume of customers.

"Sell More Jewelry Online with Social Marketing" will be available near the end of March, after Easter. You'll be able to get the book in your choice of formats - a downloadable ebook, or a spiral-bound printed book.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this ...

Strategies for Tagging Your Content
on Social Websites

Tagging is an important element in most social websites. It's an easy, flexible system for storing, finding, and using your own content as well as other people's.

A “tag” is a keyword assigned to a piece of content – it's a relevant word or phrase that describes and classifies the item so it can be easily found later.

Almost any form of online content can have tags assigned to it – web pages, blog posts, photos, videos, social site profiles, music files, bookmarked content, etc.

Good tagging will help your content get found by people who are searching for what you have to offer!

The Other Value of Tags

Social websites' tag pages are often indexed by Google and other search engines, making them a good source of highly qualified visitors to your online jewelry business – as well as providing valuable incoming links.

But only if you've done a good job of tagging your content.

Unfortunately, many people rush through tagging, quickly slapping just one or two lame tags onto their content – thereby throwing away a golden opportunity for traffic and links.

Don't make that mistake with your tags.

Taking the time to tag your content thoroughly is worth far more than the minute it takes you to do it!

You'll get better results from your tags if you include keywords your customers are most likely to use for your content and your jewelry.

Power Tips for Tagging

Your goal is to make sure that as many people as possible will find your tagged content on social sites – and that this content has the opportunity to wind up on as many Google tag page results as possible!

So you need to include tags other people might search for.

Try these tagging strategies:

  • When you tag your own content, try to use both general words and specific words that will help your stuff get found often. Take the time to add as many tags as you can think of that are relevant to the item.

  • Check the social site's “popular tags” tag cloud and use as many relevant tags from it as possible.

  • Use multiple forms of each tag word (bead, beads, beaded, beading) to create more opportunities for your content to be found.

  • Use misspellings. Many searchers know what they want, but don't know how to spell it. Including misspelled tags is an easy way to pick up extra traffic from these folks.

  • Don't use tags that aren't relevant to your content.

Tag Clouds

A tag cloud is a box filled with the tags that are associated with the site's content.

In a tag cloud, tags are usually single words, listed alphabetically. The words in the largest font size are the ones that are found most often in the site's content; the smallest font size words are found the least often.

So you can use the tag cloud to find tags both alphabetically and by popularity. The tags are usually clickable and will take you to a tag page with a collection of items that are associated with that tag.

You can use a tag cloud to find content on a particular topic, or to find other social site members whose interests include a certain tag, etc.

NOTE: "Sell More Jewelry Online with Social Marketing" will be available at the end of March 2008!

Neat Jewelry-Related Website

Our neat site this week is impressive for its "green" approach to jewelry-making as well as for the site's design: Newspaper Jewelry.

Jewelry artist Holly Anne Mitchell uses every part of the newspaper - right down to the comic strips, crossword puzzles, and stock listings - to create wonderfully wearable pieces. (She also branches out into using sweetener packets, coupons, and old lottery tickets in her jewelry.)

I'm so impressed with Holly's vision for taking recycling to this inspiring and artistic level! And her website design is absolutely perfect for showcasing her work.
