Your Profitable Jewelry Business
Your Jewelry on Stage
by Rena Klingenberg
If your town has a local Little Theatre that puts on plays, it may provide an opportunity for your jewelry business.
One of my friends works with our town's Little Theatre. For each play, my friend is involved in getting the necessary props to set the scenes for that particular show.
The theatre company gives her a budget to work with for each play, and she goes through the script to see what the playwright describes for the setting in each scene. She has to pay attention to the era, location, and other details in the script, so she can get the most accurate props possible to fulfill the playwright's vision.
Then she goes around to antique shops, thrift shops, garage sales, etc. to accumulate the various items described.
But of course plays need more than props. They also need costumes, which is where a wonderful opportunity lies for jewelry artists - because costumes often include jewelry.
Although jewelry for plays is usually faux or costume jewelry that looks real, the design opportunities could be great creative fun. And you'd have lots of potential for making good connections and spreading the word about your business.
An especially valuable benefit to you would be that your name and jewelry business contact info would be printed in the play's printed theatre program, where it will be read by everyone who attends the play.
And who attends plays?
In my community, the majority of theatre-goers are people toward the wealthier end of the economic scale.
They love to support their local arts, and they can afford to purchase jewelry. That's a top-notch, ready-to-buy customer base for your work.
If this sounds interesting and your community has a Little Theatre, call and see if you can set up a meeting with the person in charge of costumes (in some theatres, it's a different person for each play).
Of course, you'd have to be willing to create faux jewelry that's within a certain budget and looks like what the playwright describes the characters wearing. You'd also have to be willing to share creative control of the jewelry designs to a greater or lesser degree, depending on the costume director.
However, you'd still be paid for your jewelry, and you'd have the fun of seeing your jewelry on stage. Also, the contacts and exposure you'd gain could be very valuable to your business.
You may also have one other opportunity as a result of being the play's jewelry designer: You may get to have a jewelry trunk show in the theatre lobby before and after each performance of the play.
Our local theatre includes a solo art exhibit/sale (usually paintings or photography) in the lobby during the run of every play.
If you're the play's jewelry designer, it shouldn't be hard to gain permission to do a classy jewelry trunk show before and after each performance, especially if you make it known that you're donating a portion of your sales to the theatre!
Neat Jewelry-Related Website
Our neat site this time is an extremely useful tool for anyone interested in selling jewelry at shows and festivals. It's the Fairs and Festivals Calendar, a "shows, fairs, and festivals finder" with detailed lists of events, including:
- Name and date of event
- City and exact location of event
- Event contact information
- Event website URL (if applicable)
- Description of event
- Size of event
- What type of vendors they are taking applications for - crafts, art, food, musicians, commercial, etc.
- How many vendor spaces are available
- How much the vendor spaces cost
- Deadline for applying for space
- Whether the show is juried.
This calendar is an excellent place to start your research when you're wondering which shows or craft fairs to apply for.
