Your Profitable Jewelry Business
How Do I "Brand"
My One-Person Jewelry Business?
Question from Carol R.:
Yesterday I went to a business networking lunch, and we had a speaker talking about how to make a small business successful. She mentioned "branding" as one of the most important things a business should do. I felt too awkward to ask there at the lunch, but although I've heard of business branding as kind of a current buzzword, I don't really understand what it is, or exactly how it could help my one-person jewelry business, or even how to do it! Can you please help? Thank you so much!
Answer from Rena:
"Branding" means giving your jewelry business and your jewelry lines a strong, recognizable identity. Customers should gain an immediate, definite impression of your "company" and your art, and remember you and your jewelry because of it.
Branding isn't as mysterious as business gurus tend to make it sound. Basically, it involves consciously aligning each decision you make regarding your jewelry business with the brand identity and impression you've decided to create.
It involves your:
- packaging
- colors
- displays
- jewelry designs
- materials and techniques used in your jewelry
- customer service
- methods of selling your work
- places you sell your work
- advertising and marketing
- community service
- clothing and behavior
- website look & feel
- "voice" you use in your blog
- etc.
Think of the most successful jewelry artists you've seen at shows and galleries. For each of them, I'll bet you have an immediate "impression" of the look, feel, and personality of their business. That's branding. And it leads to success.
For examples of other successful jewelry artists and how they use branding, visit the websites of the jewelry artists in our series of Jewelry Business Success Stories. How do each of them communicate their particular "brand" via their jewelry, packaging, website, etc.?
Now with that inspiration, you should be able to create your own unique "brand" that's perfect for your one-person jewelry business!
Neat Jewelry-Related Website
The Jewelry section of a blog called "Modish" is a wonderful and fascinating place.
Jena, the proprietress of Modish, says, "Modish is a stylish blog for indie shoppers. I ignore the stale, the overdone. I am not interested in the mass-produced or mass-marketed. I am for the independent craftsperson, designer, shopper, creator and artist."
Really, I highly recommend the entire Modish blog - but if you have time for only a small part of it, then you must see the Jewelry section.
The Jewelry page loads a bit slowly because there are so many images and things on it, but it's well worth the wait. You'll be wonderfully inspired by the work of all the talented indie jewelers Jena has gathered there!
