Your Profitable Jewelry Business:

A Profitable New Market for
School Spirit Jewelry

by Rena Klingenberg

Autumn is the time of year when school spirit is at its peak.

Whether they're returning to the same school or starting out at a new one, students are the most patriotic about their school in the Fall semester.

Traditional events like football games and homecoming celebrations make students and fans rabid to wear their school's colors.

That means a nice demand for jewelry in school colors.

I've mentioned earlier that bracelets and earrings made in school colors (sometimes with charms of school mascots) have been huge sellers for me. If you price these well and sell them in venues where you can reach students and their families, you can sell a ton of these - especially in the Fall semester.

You can also check with your school about doing a Jewelry Fundraiser that benefits the school with a percentage of the profits on your school spirit jewelry.

But here's a new - and potentially very lucrative - market for school spirit jewelry:

Alumni (former students) of colleges and universities.

Most colleges and universities have an alumni organization of former students who actively participate in gatherings, activities, and charitable events several times a year.

Colleges that don't have an actual alumni organization will at least have an alumni newsletter that's mailed out to former students in the Fall and Spring.

Active alumni often have season tickets for their old school's sporting events, come back for homecoming in the Fall, and donate to the school's scholarships and other programs.

And if these former students are still interested enough in their old school to be involved in its alumni organization, you can bet they'll be very interested in wearing high-quality, handmade jewelry in their school's colors.

Some of these alumni will happily wear the same kind of school spirit jewelry you'd make for middle-school or high school students.

But you should also consider offering more "grown up" jewelry styles - your regular jewelry lines made in the school colors. These more sophisticated styles can sell quite well - and more profitably - to alumni who want to show their spirit without looking like they're wearing their children's jewelry.

Also consider making men's jewelry in school colors. This is a very under-served market niche - and remember that more and more men wear jewelry on an everyday basis.

Check with the colleges and universities in your state to ask about their alumni organizations and publications. Contact the people in charge of these groups and newsletters, and find out about upcoming events and opportunities.

The people in charge of alumni groups are usually very friendly and helpful, and eager to work with someone who has anything that might interest their alumni.

Here are just a few of the ways you could market your school-color jewelry to alumni:

  • Arrange to do a trunk show of jewelry in school colors at an alumni gathering or event. This could easily turn into a fun and profitable annual engagement for you.
  • Ask the alumni organization president how you can do a jewelry fundraiser involving the alumni - and where they'd like the donation to go. Alumni will be especially generous in buying jewelry in their school's colors when they know their purchase is also supporting one of their favorite causes.
  • Visit local shops that do a lot of pre-game business on the college's football days, and see about doing a game-day trunk show, or wholesaling your school spirit jewelry to the shop.
  • Arrange to do a trunk show at a restaurant or bar that does a ton of alumni business before and after games. Football games last a long time, so people always need to eat and celebrate before and after the game. Right before the game, when the fans' emotions are highest, you can sell an incredible amount of jewelry to alumni who are rabid to accessorize fashionably in their school colors.
  • Write an article for the alumni newsletter, with your jewelry business info at the end of the article. For best results, first find out what kind of content the newsletter editor needs and work closely with him/her on your article.
  • Place a paid ad (with a great photo!) for your sophisticated school-color jewelry in the alumni newsletter.
  • Many active alumni are well-connected businesspeople - and by getting to know them through your line of sophisticated school color jewelry, you'll be opening the door to lots of other opportunities for your other jewelry designs too!
