Your Profitable Jewelry Business:

A Timely Tip -
Are Wristwatches Becoming Obsolete?

by Rena Klingenberg

The last time I wore a wristwatch was probably in 1997.

Since then, the clock on my cell phone has been doing the job my watch used to do.

It turns out that I'm not alone in this. An ever-growing number of people are skipping wristwatches and relying on the clocks built into their cell phones, iPods, and other electronic gadgets.

This trend is especially prevalent in people under age 30.

Recent studies show that each year, fewer and fewer people are considering a wristwatch to be a necessity - or even an important accessory.

In fact, as cell phones get fancier and more multi-functional (like the iPhone), they've become a hotter fashion statement than any watch currently is.

About 7 years ago, I used to make wristwatches by creating beaded or wire bands for purchased watch heads - and these were extremely hot sellers for me.

Also whenever I taught jewelry workshops back then, the participants nearly always asked to make beaded wristwatches.

A couple of years after that, I got tired of making watches so I sold the last few of them I'd made, and I haven't made any since.

I don't know for sure, but I bet those watches would sell much more slowly for me nowadays.

After all, when your customer's ever-present cell phone is also a clock, stopwatch, timer, calendar, and alarm clock, they're likely to be less interested in spending money on a wristwatch that does any of those things.

For myself, I tend to be a minimalist - I don't like to own things I'm not using. So I don't really imagine myself buying a watch in the foreseeable future.

Does that mean I'm predicting the end of the wristwatch market?

No. A lot of people do still buy and wear watches, although that population shrinks a little every year.

But unless I had custom wristwatch orders or an established market for watches, I probably wouldn't invest in supplies to make them.

What do you think?

I'm very interested in hearing your thoughts and experiences regarding the wristwatch market - you can share your comments over at my blog via this link:
