Your Profitable Jewelry Business:
Customer Conspiracies
by Rena Klingenberg
One of the really fun things about selling your jewelry is having a role in your customers' gift-giving.
Sometimes you even find yourself involved in interesting conspiracies with your customers - such as when you're selling your jewelry at a show, and a customer wants to secretly buy a gift for the person they came to the show with.
One year at a Christmas art show, two ladies stopped by my jewelry booth - a woman in her early 20's, along with her mother. They were warm, friendly people, and obviously had a great relationship.
They loved my beaded cuff bracelets, and mother and daughter each tried on her favorite one, with much giggling and fun.
Then they reminded each other that they were on a strict Christmas shopping mission, and weren't supposed to be finding things for themselves.
So they put the bracelets down and bought a few pieces of my jewelry for the people on their shopping list. Then they bid me a merry goodbye, and moved on to continue their Christmas shopping.
About ten minutes later the daughter hurried back to my booth alone, and quickly bought the cuff bracelet her mother had liked so much. I hurriedly packaged it for her while she kept looking over her shoulder to make sure her mother hadn't noticed where she was.
As she left my booth she hid the gift box in her purse, saying gleefully, "Mom's going to be so surprised when she opens this!"
Not fifteen minutes after she left, her mother came sneaking back to my booth to buy the cuff bracelet her daughter had liked.
As I quickly packaged the bracelet she purchased for her daughter, she noticed that her own favorite bracelet was gone.
All I could think of to say was, "You have such good taste - it sold right after you left!" Of course I didn't say a word about her daughter's visit.
So the mother giggled about her "good taste", and I handed her the gift box containing her daughter's bracelet. She hid it in her purse - so exactly like her daughter had just done that it was hard not to laugh and give away the secret!
She left me with a Merry Christmas and "Thank you - I just know Vicki's going to love it!"
I smile every time I think of how this mother and daughter must have laughed on Christmas day when they opened their bracelets from each other!
Neat Jewelry-Related Website
Today's neat site is Christine Kaltoft's graphic contemporary jewelry.
Her work is like pen-and-ink doodles and sketches made from wire. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it - but it has a cheerful, "anything can happen" kind of look.
I think Christine could probably sketch anything with wire, and I'd love to see her work in person!
