16 Year Old Jeweller

I have just turned 16, and have been making and selling jewellery for three years now, and I am looking to selling my merchandise in less local markets.

This is quite a broad question, but what should I do to get my business off the ground, in terms of money, marketing, and advertising?

I live in a very small town, and cannot travel often, so I am limited in resources and market options.

I don’t like selling online, but I also want to broaden where my jewellery is sold.

Do you have any tips for me?

Some ideas for selling and promoting your work . . .
by: Rena

Hi Tessa,

First, how fantastic that you've been selling your work for three years already. I really admire your entrepreneurship, and I'm sure you have more great things ahead of you!

For more places and ways you can look into selling and promoting your work - even in your small town and the surrounding area you can travel to - please see:

Craft Show Ideas - Ten clever alternative places to set up your own craft shows for selling your jewelry - instead of at run-of-the-mill craft fairs.

Joint Ventures - Carolina Gonzalez' experience in this article may give you some ideas for working with other local businesses to sell your jewelry.

Sell Your Jewelry as Business Gifts - Businesses always have gift-giving needs. Your jewelry can be the perfect solution for them.

How Priya Got Started - Priya shares some ways she's promoted her work locally; note how, when people got to know her as a jewelry artist in a non-sales setting, the opportunities for selling her jewelry started multiplying.

Living in a smaller town can actually be an advantage for selling your jewelry. Especially if your town doesn't have many places to shop.

That makes a huge opportunity for you to make yourself known throughout the surrounding area as a fantastic local source of gifts (jewelry makes great gifts for nearly everyone!) and accessories.

For selling outside of your local area, see Selling Jewelry Wholesale and on Consignment for how to sell through shops elsewhere.

I think your age is another advantage for you. People love to see young adults like you who are proactively creating a business. They'd rather buy from you to help support what you're doing, than buy from a big company!

Love Young Artists!
by: Vicki

Awsome! I love young artists! My grandaughter started sneeking into my jewelry studio at eight years old, and I started her out making earrings, she went crazy! I helped her have a girls earring making party at her home, she charged, $5.00 to each of the girls, and they got to make 1 pair of earrings, the beads were inexspensive beads. So you could do something like that! My grandaughter is almost 14 now and helps me make jewelry to put on my etsy shop, and loves it! Lately she has been hinting to have her own shop...so I think we might work on that this summer. If you do decide to go on line etsy is a great site to test the waters. I wish you great success, and never give up!
